Does Best Buy still pull the intranet scam? I encountered this at Staples, and their manager didn't know the difference between an Intranet and the Internet.

@MayorMcRib_GitEmSteveDave: I bought some things at BestBuy last summer and they looked up the sale prices on their website without a problem. This ended up saving me over $100 vs their in store prices.

@driggity: BestBuy had a "scam" in which people would bring in prices from their INTERnet Site. When the got to the store, and saw the price was higher, they would ask an associate. The associate would then pull up the INTRAnet site, which is hosted on BestBuy's servers and only accessible from inside the company, and was different from the site viewed on the INTERnet. They would then deny the pricematch. They got caught doing it, and were supposed to change.

@blachole: Doesn't make me feel as bad about changing all their web browser homepages to search results from Consumerist.com for "Best Buy Scams" as much as it did when I did it.

@McRib_GitEmSteveDave: It's nothing like that. The whole transaction occurs on the internet site. All you really have to do at the store is pick it up.

@McRib_GitEmSteveDave: The inter/intranet could have also been legitimate ignorance of the employee. A person isn't tech savvy just because they work at a tech retailer.

But I'm not familiar with the story you mentioned, so perhaps an organized scam actually was occurring.

@theirishcreme: BestBuy's corporate office was denying it existed, A reporter reported them to the Attorney General, who investigated. Best Buy then admitted they have an "secret" site, and were sued after that by the State of Conneticut. It happened to more than one person, so it wasn't a "anomalous employee" not knowing. @ripfire: I understand the sale happens online and you pick it up instore. I was just wondering if they were still playing the "Intranet/Internet" game, and if that would that prevent you from ordering it for a cheaper price in the store on one of their "online" computers.

@MayorMcRib_GitEmSteveDave: That isn't even how it works. I used to work on the Best Buy website and the in-store site and the site you get when you get home are actually the same website.

There is some filtering done to determine if you are in a Best Buy store and you are served the in-store price (as well as a giant banner that says the price is different from the regular website), but technically speaking, this isn't a whole new website.

Also, there is a m.bestbuy.com you can use to get the online price of things on your phone. It loads a lot faster than the regular website does.

@Captain Angry: Well, you should talk to the State Attorney of Conneticut, b/c after all of their investigation, they found the site which you refer to(and BestBuy denied existed) be a bait and switch scam. Click the Consumerist link above to get all of the stories. As I also said above, they aren't the only one who does this. I had the same problem in Staples. Their in store computers showed a different price than the real worlds computer. In fact, they had to call their Web help support to verify the price shown on the Internet Web Site, b/c Staples customer service center had the same price the store did.

@MayorMcRib_GitEmSteveDave: Not so much a scam as a batch of lazy ass web programmers. They could program it so that web only sales are TRULY web only and no tallow in store pickup, and then they could mark store specific prices with what stores they are available in, but they are lazy and won't do that. Most shoppers are unfortunately MORE lazy and accept ONLY the price on the tag...moral of the story...a smart shopper ALWAYS wins. =)
