In reply to Intel's New Atom Chips: What They Mean for You
I remember waking up one morning and my computer screen looking like that first pic. I took out my video card and a few of the resistors had cracked open. It will be a while before 1080p will be a standard on netbooks, if netbooks do last that long...

That first pic looks like when I'm trying to watch Comcast digital cable.

Back on topic, though aside from the space saving, is there much an advantage besides a tiny boost in battery life? I can appreciate it for the great engineering pushing that processor on to that footprint, but it just doesn't seem "amazing".
That's not saying I'm bummed I just got a netbook LAST WEEK

In reply to Intel's New Atom Chips: What They Mean for You
Guys, the processor is a $30 chip. Seriously.

    1) The internet does not revolve around YouTube
    2) You can still watch YouTube, just not YouTube 1080p

The whole point of netbooks was to create dirt-cheap computers just for browsing the internet. With this chip, can you:

    1) Browse Giz? Yes
    2) Listen to music on web-radio? Yes
    3) Play Flash games? Yes
    4) Watch YouTube? Yes
    5) Browse forums? Yes
    6) Read online news? Yes
    7) Check your banking info? Yes
    8) Check your email? Yes
    9) Check Facebook? Yes
    10) Twitter? Yes

Can you do it all pretty damn well? Yes.

As a result of this next release of the Atom, we get smaller, faster, lighter, longer-running machines. That's a good thing.

These are NOT primary laptops. Intel has not lost sight of the reason why OEMs build netbooks and neither should you.

@blash: Flash is the de facto standard for internet video--if Intel's graphics core could play it decently (pulling strain off the CPU), I don't think anyone would have complaints. I wouldn't.

@matt buchanan: But the point is it can - so long as you don't up the resolution too high. If you want to up the resolution more, buy a proper laptop.

@blash: It's not unreasonable to want 720p flash video, even in a secondary laptop. That's just enough for full screen. Besides, Ion netbooks are $399.

So the EeeBox with the 300 and Ion combo would still be the way to go then? If the darn thing ever comes out anyway.

I have the same motherboard and it is running Windows 7 with 2 gb of RAM, and is more than adequate for running Boxee and Hulu desktop. I can watch video streamed through my network and online sources with no slow downs. Cost me about $220, total, but that is including parts I had on hand.

The fact that they can call those "entry-level desktop" processors is a shame. I have a 7 year old Athlon XP system that could probably outperform their chips. Seems to me Intel hasn't truly innovated in a while outside of their i line of CPUs. I hope they get busted for their forced GPU integration.

I take it I'm not alone in seeing this and thinking MBP MBP MBP.

Any Apple employee care to risk torture and death and confirm a January release?

    Let the speculation begin!
I'm hoping for a Macbook Pro with USB 3.0 and blu-ray within the next year- that's when I upgrade from my late '06 MBP.
Either that or a black Powerbook G5 with carbon fiber casing and a DVD burner in it. That would be sweet...

I knew there was a reason I was putting off buying a new laptop. I just hope that OEMs actually decide to bundle it with a decent GPU, not that GMA4500 garbage.

@Nathan Obbards: Considering all CPUs will have a GPU built-in, it's up to OEMs to decide if they want something "better".

In reply to FTC Suing Intel For Anti-Competitive Practices
"In addition, allegedly, Intel secretly redesigned key software, known as a compiler, in a way that deliberately stunted the performance of competitors’ CPU chips. Intel told its customers and the public that software performed better on Intel CPUs than on competitors’ CPUs, but the company deceived them by failing to disclose that these differences were due largely or entirely to Intel’s compiler design."

In reply to Intel Shows Off Core i7 Mod Contest Winners
I'm wholly unimpressed by the terminator case. It just looks like he's glued some crap on to what should be a beautiful Antec bare bones case. Mods should improve upon the original, not spoil it.

Edit: Clicking through the site reveals that it looks even worse than suspected. Though the mod creator has a pretty poor (and therefore amusing) answer for the "How does your mod take the i7 to the next level" bit:

With the aid of the Core I7 920, I can now run AutoCAD very easily. It has enabled me to follow and finish a course in CAD drawing. I have used this to enhance my position in looking for a new job. Thanx to Intel I hope to get a new change in life and new horizons to discover.

I guess considering it's best in Netherlands no one else there entered.

damn better get ready Intel cus you ain't winning this one. Can intel just call the FTC and say, "can we just pay and get this over with so we don't have to pay our lawyers?"

Govt ain't losing this one, especially with all the evidence they and EU have against Intel
