    Hummmm…
It might rest on your shoulder nicely like that. Perhaps this odd device does have a place in this world. Cheap, hands free talking; just like in the old days when you held the phone between your shoulder and your ear while cooking dinner.

The biggest beef I have with iphone games is that my hand/fingers always get in the way of the game. When I touch or swipe the screen, I always end up blocking my view, which makes it frustrating to play. The novelty of the touch screen wears off after a while. For this reason, the iphone will never be a legitimate gaming device.

Wow, that's pretty worthless. It even looks like the speaker's completely blocked and the headphone jack is covered up with no sort of pass-through...

@Algerad: @tande04: That's an excellent point. As others have said here, ever since the 3.0 SDK came out I've been eagerly awaiting something exactly like this, but with buttons and a stick... but I never pondered the problem of the speaker/3.5mm jack being covered. It's a bump in the road, yes... but we need to get around it and get to that finish line!

@Redrum4breakfast: You could get around it pretty easily.

Just carve out a hollow part like that iPhone "speaker" system has.

@tande04: You mean that griffin "acoustic amp" dock? It's an awesome idea... I just wish it was larger scale.

One could also just throw in another audio jack (or a better speaker) on whatever controller add-on they make... There are car chargers that have audio jacks on 'em that only plug into the dock connector, so it shouldn't be too hard.

didnt they say with the new SDK, we can make hardware that interacts with apps!!!

someone should make a universal joystick and release API's for it!

@Moe Kalbouneh: All games would have to implement the accessory makers' API. Until Mad Catz Nyko etc make one, theres no chance that'll happen.

@appletoad: I don't think it would be that bad actually.

I always said the same thing. It could never work because of all of the different games on the app store. While it still wouldn't cover all the games I think it would still work.

You've seen the devs get together for a lot of things as it is. Facebook integration might be an example but I was thinking more along the lines of open fient or plus+. They've started implementing other's API's in their own stuff as it is, I don't think its that big of a jump to get there.

@tande04: There's no way you can tell me that the number of games in the app store would be a hindrance to a universal gamepad API.

Lots of people have done that: Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Commodore...

    ;)

I really thought once 3.0 opened up the 30 pin to 3rd parties (thats a lot of 3s) we were going to get a useful controller attachment.

Haven't gotten many useful attachments in general though. A FM adapter is about all I remember hearing about.

    Got a deja vú feeling...

I remember the J2ME days when suddenly all us devs thought mobile gaming was the next big thing (a colleague of mine was sure the Ngage could destroy the GBA for good...)

Problem is, MOST CELLPHONE USERS DONT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT GAMING. Thats why only a few companies like Gameloft were able to make a biz on this (thanks to a lot of outsourcing BTW) and even they are moving towards more traditional venues, like the DS.

More so, no gamer I know thinks the touchscreen can or will ever replace a real pad.

Sorry Maclovers and Appletards, but the fact is that unless Apple makes a new console (Pippin anyone?) or a gaming-dedicated iPhone, this is all hype...

It is quite a big market, which I hope will continue to grow. The thing to think about is that the average iPhone/Touch user is going to spend $10.00 on a game, while a console gamer is going to spend $20.00 to $60.00.

I'm surprised you call the fact that not everyone who buys an iPhone will do so to play games an advantage. When that comes to moving units, it's a distinct disadvantage. Everyone who purchases a DS is going to be buying games, and feeding licensing dollars to Nintendo. I know quite a few iPhone owners who aren't interested in buying any games.
