@brianesser76: I'd never jailbroken my iPod Touch before (1st gen). ...last night I finally decided to give it a whirl.
Couldn't have been easier. And I've spent way too much time goin' through everything on Cydia - it's like someone's turned on a light in a dimly lit room! This is so friggin' awesome. :)
@nutbastard: it is an outrage as THEY state that they will not be making a windows version. it's beyond appreciated that there are devs out there that give us these things. it's just shitty that now windows users are SOL.
I really need to find out the people who told me to update the Splurge to 3.1.1. It was one of the dummer things I have done as of late, and it angers me, as I really didn't gain much. I tried downgrading, but would have lost all my info and apps because iTunes wouldn't restore info stored under 3.1 to a 3.0 phone, so I had to re-upgrayyedd.
I updated to 3.1 a few days ago. I noticed my phone was acting a little flaky--it wasn't providing signal in areas where I had previously gotten 3G, and it seemed to chomp up the battery much more quickly. I was curious, so I gave it a full charge last night and then set it on my nightstand, totally idle, no Push or Bluetooth or Wifi.
The battery drained to 80% just sitting there completely idle in standby mode overnight. I left the phone in standby mode during the day, then took a 20-minute phone call. The battery drained to 60%.
Before 3.1, I could use 3G, SMS, and iTunes for about an hour before I noticed any decrease in the battery indicator. Before, it would usually just creep down to about 90% after about an hour of heavy use. Now, the phone sucks up energy just sitting idle! There is a serious problem with the newest update. It doesn't seem to be Push-related, since I don't use Push. Is it a radio baseband thing? I hope they fix it soon, because it seems like my phone is starving for juice all the time now. It wasn't this bad before.
I wouldn't be complaining about this if the phone had a track record for lousy performance. I'm whining only because this seems to be a DRASTIC departure from the quality and performance I've come to expect from the iPhone. Its functionality and reliability were much, much better before this update.
I've been having just about every problem under the sun with 3.1:
First my phone lost its wifi, so I sent it back to Apple and got a replacement, then the replacement wouldn't make calls, so I sent it back to Apple and got a second replacement, and now the second replacement is shutting off randomly and won't reboot unless I reset it.. oh.. and it has awful battery life.
This is all after my charging cable frayed in the first 2 weeks of owning the phone. Apple owes me a 3GS for free, seriously. I'm switching to Sprint and getting the HTC Hero when it comes out on the 11th.
@Kev50027: Those Apple cables are the shittiest cables I have EVER used out of any of the million and a half USB devices I've used in my life. I have to wonder how they passed any sort of stress testing...or if Apple even bothered.
The one that came with the phone didn't make it more than a couple of months without the rubber coating separating at both ends then the wires themselves fraying.
I got another cable later and even making sure to take GREAT care of it, the rubber on one end was separating again within a few months.
My Zune cable from YEARS ago is in perfect condition and it has been through hell and back between my house and daily use in the car for the better part of 2 or 3 years including one or two extended periods of heavy use during and lengthy hurricane evacuations.
@Rob: Boy, I dunno what the hell kind of cables the iPhones are shipping with, but the countless iPod cables I have have yet to disintegrate like that. Hmm...
@Rob: I know, I was stunned when the thing literally fell apart in my hand. I've had a 3rd party cable (that cost less than the overpriced Apple shit), and it has worked just fine with no issues at all. Also, the cable Apple sent me to replace the one that frayed is different, and almost unusable because it has a huge plastic piece on the part that plugs into the phone, which makes holding the phone while charging very uncomfortable and awkward.
I have never had a good experience with Apple, and I vow to never purchase another product from them.
@KTK1990: get what? 3.1? In iTunes, check for updates automatically. I wouldn't advise installing 3.1 though if you want to jailbreak/unlock anyway (3GS more specifically) Google it, it's everywhere
I had one instance just yesterday my 3GS with 3.1 firmware the charge level dropped an unexpected amount. I looked at it around 4 PM and noticed it was 30 percent left and I hadn't used it for more than half an hour total that day. I then thought to myself if I charged it properly overnight. After checking the Usage meter since last full charge it did indeed say 21 minutes with 8+ hours of standby.
Wifi On, Bluetooth Off, Push On (Fetching every 15), Notifications On, received about 5 text messages yesterday and 2 calls before noticing big drop in battery life. This is the first time I have experienced it.
I didn't even think to put 2 and 2 together. My batterly life has been soo bad on my Iphone 2g since 3.1 came out. I assumed it was just because my phone is two years old.
I woke up at 10:22 eastern today and its 1:15 eastern now. My 3GS is at 85% battery. I have used Facebook today and checked a couple of emails. Wi-Fi on, Push on, bluetooth off. I'm not complaining; I get to about 35% battery at the lowest on the average day and thats fine. So long as it's 0% I'm happy at the end of the day.
my 3.1 update caused my phone to randomly stop receiving calls, text messages, push e-mail and sometimes no internet connection, all while telling me that i have full service and am connected to 3g

yeah, where's my free software that 50 guys have been working on for zero compensation? this is an outrage!

I hope there is sarcasm in there. I hope for your sake. Its free. Why complain?
OH wait, you people complain if it costs money and if its free, whats the point in reasoning.

so borrow a mac for 20 minutes. or stick with 3.0. it's not as if 3.1 offers much anyways.

My 2g touch loses around 30% battery life for a 20 minute youtube video on wifi.

I thank the dev teams for their hard work, but it seems unnecessary.
