My fear is that Apple will remove the "Upload your own music" function, restricting it to iTunes purchased music only. That sorta kills it for anyone who buys music from Amazon or Zune Marketplace.

@Xagest: That actually sounds like an Apple move to make. Then again, for those with backup issues as discussed below, it would mostly benefit the few iTunes store power users since you can't redownload music that doesn't exist in their catalog anymore (for that obvious reason) if one were to lose them.

Then again would they even offer enough storage for those who have spent thousands of dollars?

Edit: then again that would make sense to avoid potential hassles from the RIAA as the iTMS is exponentially more popular. You know they are the last group of tools who would want easy to use features that prevented people from having to repurchase music.

If we judge the value of the purchase based on the size of that blue Apple lala image, it must be a monstrous acquisition.

It is pretty clear that everyone is nudging everyone else to be first in line for the streaming show. Apple is likely just trying to hedge their bets on the purchase model iTunes is currently based on and will have a system in-place if and when streaming becomes mainstream. It is a smart move (as usual) by the fruity elves in Cupertino - now it is just a matter of sitting back and seeing if they can take advantage of it.

@Monty: Good points. I'd bet the "fruity elves in Cupertino" as you so daftly put it probably will use it well. That said I'm not giving them an automatic pass as they have made mistakes before. We shouldn't let the great decade that was the 2000's blind us to Apple's prior blunders.

HAha. oh gee. Apple buys up smaller companies and uses their IP to jazz up their programs.

So all you MS bashers out there can suck it. It's standard practice in the industry even for the tantric sex genius guru bike knobs at cupertino. Standard. Practice.

So, when fundraising time comes along will users get inundated with messages asking for a $120 gift in exchange for passes to the local art museum that's free already several days a month?

What do you mean I've never heard of lala.com? I use it every day. Their "play a song once for free" policy is invaluable. Pitchfork.com also links to it in almost every album review.

In reply to Apple Is Now in the Streaming Music Business
I assume that Music streaming will now be integrated into the iPod/iPhone. Since there are a number of apps that do this already will they be rejected from the itunes store for duplicating core functionality or confusing users. Please note I am not trying to start a fight here, I am asking what happens to existing approved apps when apple includes new functionality

I have a feeling they are doing this to get Lala's talent/expertise, rather than any actual use out of what Lala has established (or not established, as the case may be).

New server farm + Lala purchase + iTunes ubiquity + smartphone penetration + major label relationships = beating Spotify to the punch in the US.

@secretmanofagent: This is by far the best bang for your buck.
The Sept upgrade fixed everything that was wrong with the original release of this. I was PISSED when I bought it in August. Demanded a refund from anyone that would listen (and still didn't get it). After the upgrade it works beautifully.
No major issues at all and I sent them just a few things they can tweak to make it a more pleasant GPS.

In reply to "Uffizi in a Touch" Brings Cover Flow to Renaissance Masterpieces
I was just at the Ufizzi Gallery 2 weeks ago and they already have touch screen stations all over the walls downstairs that are touch friendly. You can use your finger to move 360 degrees around some of the closed rooms in the gallery. It was kind of like a virtual tour. So i'm guessing the new stations will focus more on the artwork rather than the rooms. Also, Palazzo Strozzi has the same touch stations.

In reply to Paul McCartney Doesn't Understand the Internet
It sounds to me like Sir Paul understands the internet just fine. Anybody who understands the internet knows quite well that anything that gets released will be available for illegal copying shortly afterwards. Given the choice of releasing the music and then waiting for it to be illegally copied around without compensation, or just not releasing it at all, he's chosen the latter. Or at the very least, leaning in that direction.

You might not like or agree with the idea, but it certainly doesn't mean he doesn't understand the internet. If anything, it means he understands it all too well.

@Mike Fulton: I more or less agree that Paul understands the internet fine, what Paul is somewhat clueless about is how the music business operates today. That is the frightening part. Then again, when you are sitting on the library of music that he is, I suppose he can re-invent the music business wheel again, if he likes.
