<![CDATA[iPhone Beta 5 Odds and Ends: No More MMS, Better YouTube?]]> The official script may have minimized it as a maintenance release, but some users are finding out that iPhone Beta 5 contains more than bugfixes. So far: YouTube's improved, and hacked MMS is no more.

The guys at winandmac say they've noticed a change in the YouTube app's stream handling. Now, instead of defaulting to the low-res OTA version of a YouTube video when connected via 3G, the app plays the high-res version previously reserved for Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, in our comments and over at the iPhone Blog, AT&T-bound Beta 5 users are reporting that the simple MMS stopgap hack is no longer possible.

It's only been few hours since Beta 5 burst forth into this world, naked and screaming, so more changes are bound to bubble up to the surface—there are already rumblings that new anti-tethering measures have been implemented, but this hasn't been confirmed (and may have more to do with new security features in iTunes 8.2 than iPhone OS). <![CDATA[iPhone 3.0 Beta 2 Now Available, Fixes Sluggishness, Introduces Push Notifications]]> The second iPhone 3.0 Beta is now available, and developers can go download it immediately from Apple's iPhone dev page. Updated.

No idea what bugs it fixes or if it improves speed and stability at all, but it's new, and you like new things. [iPhone via Gear Live]

Update: A developer reader tells us that it does feel much snappier, especially in the scrolling area.

He also says that there's a new Store area in the Settings, which is kinda mysterious because there's nothing there.

Update 2: Push notifications now work, and developers can start making apps with it. AND, Skype still works over 3G.

<![CDATA[iPhone SDK Beta 5 Now Up: Bug Fixes, Updated OS Support]]> Besides supporting the latest iPhone OS version, beta 5 doesn't do a whole lot else besides throwing in small tweaks to the UI, tweaks to the developers tools and some bug fixes. No big feature addition like last time, but you gotta update if you're making iPhone apps. You just gotta! There probably won't be very many more of these before the next iPhone's out.

This fifth beta release of the iPhone SDK includes a complete set of tools, compilers, frameworks, and documentation for creating iPhone OS applications. These tools include the Xcode IDE, and the Instruments analysis tool, among many others. With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone and iPod touch using the included iPhone Simulator.
