I've had a lot of problems with AT&T over the last few months, and one of my biggest frustrations has been that when I call AT&T about it, they act like they've never heard of anyone having a problem before. A couple of times I've berated them into giving me a substantial discount on my bill (as much as a whole month) but generally they have just said "we can give you a pro-rated discount for this service problem" which means they'll refund like $1.50 because that's a day's worth of service or something. And then I get really steamed because of course I don't pay as much as I do to have intermittent service, I pay for constant access.
Now this app provides a way of logging, for legal purposes if necessary, every service problem and for anyone who wants to get a discount off their bill, they should be able to get a days worth of service for every documented problem. And for those looking to leave AT&T early, this app may very well be the ticket, since if they aren't holding up their end of the contract, you aren't obligated to stay with them for 2 years.
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: I was just about to post something similar, maybe the app should save all the messages and send them only when you are on wifi
@xxdesmus: I just think it would be the height of irony if the AT&T service is finally bought completely & utterly to its knees by people sending them messages. It would be a feedback loop. More messages = more data usage = less banwidth for everything else = more messages and so on.
I hope that's not the picture for the actual app. It clearly says, "Please do not use this app while driving" while the accompanying picture shows a transmission from an interstate. I highly doubt that person pulled over just to send this notification.
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: We can now look forward to increased AT&T coverage about a mile or so up the road from the spot where you used to drop calls. ;-)
@OCEntertainment: I think this app might be more effective in conjunction with some GPS mapping software where it would automatically plot out the areas it could receive a signal and where it could not, then you wouldn't be sending individual messages about a single specific location but rather the combination of map data from all users would form a map much like the Verizion commercials.
I mean, supposing they did make a generated map of all of AT&T's dead spots, if that thing leaked I'm pretty sure their Luke Wilson costs alone could send them into bankruptcy.
Seeing as my iPhone generally drops calls that last longer than ten minutes, especially in my home in Brooklyn, I look forward to having this app constantly running.
Because in addition to call stability, the iPhone is well-known for its battery's long duration.
@Mikestan: Thats all part of their marketing strategy. "Look! We released an app to show us where our service is bad and no one has ever submitted s problem area!"
@Mikestan: you can go back and mark the spot later. it lets you mark any spot, so you can all your favorite drop call zones in the comfort of your own home. as for not having signal for mark it, use wifi.
So does it use the iPhone's GPS to record the coordinates and then transmit them at a later time because obviously if you have a coverage gap or network problem, you can't send any information to anyone, including a notification to ATT that there isn't any service in that particular area.
@OMG! Ponies!: Maybe more bars in more places is just a big marketing scheme and ATT bribed cell phone companies to add more bars to their phones than are really available. Or, you know, maybe there's just way too much traffic for ATTs aging network.
Alternatively instead of leaving your GPS on your dash where you're advertising it to thieves you could actually you know take it down and secure it in the glove compartment, boot, take it with you, hell even bunging it under the seat is probably enough for potential smash and grabbers to overlook it. Doing so wouldn't take any longer than fitting this awkward looking lock.
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: I'm not sure I'd group Phil Schiller and 'every employee' in the same category. And I think it's pretty safe to say that most Giz readers do know who the top honchos are at Apple.
@back_at_it: I'd like to hope that not every single Giz reader is such a hardcore Apple fan where they know all these names otherwise that's pretty sad. I mean, can you name the Senior VP of marketing at Dell or Microsoft?
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: In fact, I cannot name the Senior Vp of Marketing at Dell off the top of my head. But I'd argue that Apple puts more of their higher-ups in the limelight than does Microsoft or Dell. Also, I don't find it sad when someone takes an interest in something, be it Apple or otherwise.
Hey guys, word of advice. If you are married, just buy her an iPhone when you get yours. That's what I did. Eliminates most of these arguments. Heck, my wife encourages me to use my iPhone while she's dragging me around the mall. Keeps me entertained so she can shop longer.

Who's Phil Shiller though? I think you can't always assume everyone knows who every employee at Apple is.

NO Good going.
YES You've found a narcissistic egomaniac that lashes out at anyone who does not douse them in attention. I recommend breaking up.
