The RAZR was an amazing phone. I miss having a phone which I only charged once every 3-4 days and could actually fit in my pocket, not weigh 50 pounds and be able to use while wearing gloves. And it was bullet proof.
@Aetius: So they only reason it was amazing was because it didn't really run anything significant and you didn't really big screen for its lack of ... well anything.
@Gundem: A smartphone is something you want, not need. I have a G1 and I love all the interconnectivity on the go but can I live without it? Sure! Txt and phone is all you need.
As much as I'd love an iPhone, it's not worth $100+/month to me. My wife and I have RAZRs v3xx's and are content to spend a combined ~$45/month for voice plans.
@cc82: Ahhh. As he said "As much as I'd love an iPhone, it's not worth $100+/month to me." I thought he was referring to just himself for over $100 a month....Oops.
Funny. I always wondered WHAT THE FUCK Apple was thinking releasing the iPhone 3GS yet continuing to let the (now mediocre performing) iPhone 3G live, subject to constant comparison to its bigger, fast brother, and sure to be an object of loathing to would be purchasers of it instead of an iPhone 3GS. Now I get it. Now I get it......Apple knew that 99$ price point would propel them to the top of the charts, even at the cost of millions of users angst when they realize they bought hardware that is -for all intents and purposes - a 1st generation iPhone.
Thanks, John. I had just gotten my mind off of the Nexus One for a few minutes and now you've gone and brought it right back up again.
Still, I'm sort of surprised at how many of these phones are dumb phones. Which just shows how accurate my assessment of the market is. Poor dumbphone users. They'll always be forgotten by the hype.
Also, I still have yet to figure it out: how the heck did the RAZR get to be such a popular phone. Anyone got an insight into this crazy phenomenon?
@OCEntertainment:The RAZR got to be such a popular phone the same way women with 12 year old stick bodies are held in higher regard in this country than curvy (but still flat stomach-ed) women: the media brainwashing impressionable people into seeking 'thin' at all costs.
@OCEntertainment: its all conjecture, but i think its twofold one, its the first metal case construction phone i can think of and the tactile feel of it has a huge impact on perceived value. two, this phone looks more like a star trek communicator than any i've seen. its a subconscious association, we associate that original idea as the embodiment of 'ideal' cell phone design.
now i'm not gonna tell you that it was a quality device or that it was well designed, because that would just be lies, but its perception that drives everything, and the RAZR had a huge impact on the way the average person perceived the phone
@meatbag_pussrocket: Yyyyyeah, I'm gonna go with celebrity-envy and stick-figure-lust. Sorry, but I refuse to believe that build quality minutia and Star Trek similarities are what drove the teeming masses to pick up a phone that can't do jackshit any more than any other phone.
INteresting that the 3G is listed as the top while RIM holds multiple listings as does LG. I would have an easier time with this chart if it was the entire iPhone line against the entire RIM line. I think it would be a much different picture.
However, that also seems like a lot of iPhones. If it's from Web Logs then this would only cover those people who use mobile web services regularly. I think a lot more people use their dumbphones for phone calls only.
@crikerat: Four percent is not a particularly overwhelming number. I am curious whether the split the 3GS from the iPhone 3G numbers there, and if not - why did they split the BlackBerry numbers? Interesting information, but I agree that I wonder if how these were split may hold a bias.
These are the top 10 mobile website though right? There are also mobile browsers that can handle regular websites which I'm sure aren't reflected here. For instance, I use a lot of Skyfire and Opera Mobile.
i loved my razr v3xx. it was the best phone i have ever had. why? because it played a ringtone for each different person when they sent me an SMS. iPhones can't do that for some unknown reason. only six standard sms tones. man i miss that phone. i even emailed apple about it, that's how much i want that feature.
@_BrianD_: You, dear sir, are a man of brilliance. Instead of drinking the kool-aid, you amassed it in your mouth only to use it as a high-pressure projectile against the powers that be. Instead of being content with what is, you strived for what could be. Instead of complaining ten thousand fucking times in some internet forum about some non-existent iPhone feature, you took your complaint straight to the man himself.
Nothing against the iPhone, but it's more like "Behold, yet another incredible performance demo for the iPhone that will do nothing to even scratch DS and PSP market".
Gaming isn't only about graphics and stuff, like another commenter said, or else DS would be far bellow the PSP.
But maybe something like this could convince more big gaming companies to develop better games for the iPhone.
And maybe someone releases a decent control scheme for the iPhone.
But that's a whole lotta maybes.
Apple has to be willing to pour tons of gold on top of a gaming strategy for it, or else it just won't launch...
I'd be the first to buy an iPhone 3GS if something like that ever happened though.
I like the tease that we'll be seeing this engine on another mobile platform next year. Most assume it will be Android and that would be a good choice.
What if it's targeted instead at WinPho? or maybe Zune HD? (ZunePhone?)
Microsoft and Epic have a good working relationship. If there was ever to be a tie between the Zune and Xbox a superior engine would help bridge it. Bring GoW content to a mobile device in a rail shooter format which would help limit the control issues.
this shit is effin revolutionary.....the present iphone's lack of physical buttons will always be a bottle neck for serious handheld gamers.
AFAIK , lots of other phones like droid use the same ARM cortex A8 CPU and the same PowerVR SGX GPU found in iPhone 3GS so this new tech should work with those phones as well .
But the killer device for using this Ureal engine 3 will be IMHO

No. It is the 3G, which is technically a current model, but not the newest one (aka 3GS).
