I just got a call from an at&t store (I called earlier but they said they didn't know anything yet, but they will call me when they get clarification) and they said that if you bought an iphone 3G after May 9th you could upgrade for free... I got mine May 19th.... wooohoooo!!!!
@pottyvick: can someone else confirm this? i got mine on the 15th and would really like this upgrade. the little speed increase and battery life would be much appreciated, but definitely not 700 worth of appreciation
I bought my girlfriend a 16 GB iPod Touch last October and she now wants an iPhone. She really can care less about the difference between the 3G and the new 3GS. Does anyone know if I would be able to just swap out my SIM card and vice versa, so that I can have the 3GS and she can take my 3G iPhone?
" existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)"
@mrwizzz: As I understand it, this is the "hey fuck you" if you are currently NOT contract free with ATT.
The "upgrade from another phone" threw me off, because I read that as "upgrade from another phone" as in any phone while still on ATT's network. Not so, since I have a G1 iPhone and am eligible for the $199/$299 pricing. Also I've been out of contract for around a year.
@hadees: You upgrade the memory on your 1st Gen. iPhone yourself? I thought they only came in 4 and 8gig options.
I have a first gen iphone with 8gig and want to upgrade, but I have to wait until July 6th to upgrade (according to AT&T). I'm sure there will be a Loyal Customer Upgrade plan of some sort.
@donlphi: Nope, I have a 1st gen iPhone with 16 gigs as well. I believe it came out a bit later, maybe closer to when they announced the 3G? It's served me well, but it's time to upgrade!
@trnsilver: As long as you're not under a 2 year contract, you will be good. I've only had my Gen 1 iPhone for about 14 months, but I never renewed my contract. I went through the site to "reserve" one and I'm eligible for the $199/$299 prices.
Whats funny is that i can cancel my current contract and start up a new one (including early termination fees) and it would cost about $100 cheeper then if i upgraded through this program.
@Zahada: And, AT&T doesn't let you start a new line of service within 30 or 60 days of an early termination. (I don't remember which) They'll just put you back on your old contract.
@Scuba Steve: Just this morning I was looking at my old 2002 X-terra that has a bad exhaust manifold gasket and I was damning Nissan. What a coincidence!

You should be good.
Best advice though, is to check about that as soon as possible.

So just cancel your service and sign back up as a new customer to save yourself a hunderd bucks...

If there's one set of people you always want to alienate, it's loyal customers.
