i calculate in my head every time i fill up... let alone checking oil while doing so...

and as far as changes go... that little sticker that is supposed to be in the top corner or your windshield should give you a good idea... yeah... it normally only states 3k mi. past when you had it changed... but how hard is it to add an extra 2k to that..?? or maybe check it every once in a while and see how it looks...??

otherwise.. yeah.. most cars have 'dummy lights' that let you know when something is wrong/needs to be done.. (no offense.. i understand a lot of people don't take care of their cars as though they were major appliances in their life... but they are... they get you to/from work & all the other places you want to go... after paying that much, it shouldn't be that hard to pay a little attention.....---- or maybe it's just me...)
