@brianesser76: I'd never jailbroken my iPod Touch before (1st gen). ...last night I finally decided to give it a whirl.
Couldn't have been easier. And I've spent way too much time goin' through everything on Cydia - it's like someone's turned on a light in a dimly lit room! This is so friggin' awesome. :)
@nutbastard: it is an outrage as THEY state that they will not be making a windows version. it's beyond appreciated that there are devs out there that give us these things. it's just shitty that now windows users are SOL.
I really need to find out the people who told me to update the Splurge to 3.1.1. It was one of the dummer things I have done as of late, and it angers me, as I really didn't gain much. I tried downgrading, but would have lost all my info and apps because iTunes wouldn't restore info stored under 3.1 to a 3.0 phone, so I had to re-upgrayyedd.
It's sad to see some people here actually DEFEND Apple over charging for these FIRMWARE updates.
We all know (or should know) why they do it, but it doesn't it make it right.
Like many have said, not only are all the Zune updates free, but as much as possible they even retrofit the older out of date models with new features and a new UI. When would apple ever do something like that?
And since some of you for some reason seem to think updating a Zune is somehow different than upgrading a more powerful ipod touch with a "revolutionary" OS...
The PSP, PS3, and 360 also get 100% completely free updates for life, and their OS's are more powerful than the iTouch's, the PS3's and the 360's 100X over.
@Jaianne Dickszcator: It probably means your IT support doesn't have encryption required in order to provide Exchange support. In which case, either the information being passed around just isn't that important or they're incredibly lazy/stupid. Take your pick.
@Asherek: nein, our IT worked with the phone, to have a secure way for it to access the web based version of our exchange client, this based upon me trying to use it before the changes they made to how it accesses that server. i was not ever able to get it to work, and after our IT, figured out how to not only allow it to access, but have full push notification as well. so im guessing, it is now dependant on how its set up, as our exchange server still requires certificate authenticity.
@OMG! Ponies!: You got it all wrong. It doesn't break your shit. Your shit was always broken. They just updated to point it out.
It's like when a webpage doesnt view properly in firefox but not in IE. It's the webpage and IE that's broken, not firefox. Even though the page works in IE.
@zmnatz: Still, I'd love to see the new argument in action.
"The iPhone is the greatest business device ever"
"Is that a 3G?, let's see you update it to 3.1"
"Jerk"
@chaoss13: They didn't break anything. They just removed a rather inartful kludge from the system. Now, it works betterer inasmuch as some joker's simplistic workaround isn't there to interfere with the simple elegance of the iPhone 3G.
@OMG! Ponies!: That is some impressive spin. "Some joker" was Apple, wasn't it? It was Apple's simplistic workaround - lying to Exchange server. Now that the lie has been removed, previously available functionality (syncing with Exchange Server) is gone. If I update to 3.1, I won't be able to use my 3G for work-related email and calendar reminders anymore. How anyone can call this "working betterer" is beyond me. It seems worserer for me. Much worserer. er.
3) Does the comment seem to be something other than favorable?
If you answered yes to all three questions, then I'm being a sarcastic ass. If you answered no to any of these questions, then I'm just being an ass in general.
Really, I think that paying for an firmware update, of a product you buy, it's just stupid.
I have an iPhone so I don't have this problem, but I wouldn't bitch about someone using the pirated firmware...
Think about it, NO OTHER MACHINE NEEDS A PAYMENT TO UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE.
OS, it's another deal, but how would you feel if you had to pay for every Windows security update?
The difference being that most consumer electronics devices do not get their software/firmware updated on a regular basis. Just look at all the camera users (5D mk II [for 24p, they already got a different one], GH1, etc,) begging for firmware updates and they get maybe one or a minor one during the device's lifespan. It's a little crazy. I for one am happy that Apple has a platform wherein the software can stay constant over multiple generations of hardware. Paying sucks, but it's better than having no updates at all.

yeah, where's my free software that 50 guys have been working on for zero compensation? this is an outrage!

I hope there is sarcasm in there. I hope for your sake. Its free. Why complain?
OH wait, you people complain if it costs money and if its free, whats the point in reasoning.

so borrow a mac for 20 minutes. or stick with 3.0. it's not as if 3.1 offers much anyways.

im pretty sure you can downgrade and then just re-sync - it wont force an upgrade just cuz yer syncing.

I thank the dev teams for their hard work, but it seems unnecessary.

Unitl I have an iPhone I pirated every software update. I charging for a firmware update is completely rediculous.
