@Hvedhrungr: No one needs to carry around their entire collection, just as no one needs an iPod, or a Zune, or a Sansa, or anything else of the like for that matter. They just want it, which is good enough for me.
@Hvedhrungr: I admit to being similarly puzzled by people who purchase every single TV channel available from their cable / satellite / fiber provider. There is no possible way you could watch all of those channels, so why pay for all of them?
However, the answer to why they need every channel is the same as why someone needs their entire music collection: You never know what you are going to want when you want it.
I've been eyeing this HDD up ever since it was announced. RapidRepair seem to be the only retail outlet 'selling' it, but I'm capable of fitting the drive myself so I don't need their inflated prices, ta muchly.
iPod + Shures + Rockbox + 223GB = perfection. How I've managed with 60GB 'til now I don't know!
@AnAphexTwin: Just be sure to upgrade the battery, or get an external battery case like the kind iLuv makes, because low-compression music on Rockbox firmware is just asking for a low playtime.
@Kaiser-Machead: What you want is the Western Digital HD Media Player. Attatch any USB harddrive to it and it'll play nearly any media file you've got. And it does high definition. You can usually find it for about $100.
If you want to be able to stream, look up the Popcorn Hour. It's a bit more feature filled, and a bit more utilitarian - not very athstetically pleasing. And it'll cost you more than twice as much.
Unless, of course, you're really attatched to Apple's protected offerings, in which case the iPod or ATV are your only choices.
@elementary: All of my media files are MPEG-4, since keeping a multitude of formats in one's collection doesn't make a whole lot of sense. As for iTunes' protected offerings, I'm more interested in my DVD rip collection than DRM'd movies that I can't scale down or convert if need be.
I will look into that WD though. Thanks for the reminder!

And if you don't have an ipod, why not wait a little a get a refurbished one for less?
