Well this is a royal turd... But it makes sense, at least from a branding and intellectual property perspective. Let's hope the Dev Team gets cracking ob this fast.. I can't live without my cracked apps and Doom on the train.

Given that Apple is in a stated cat and mouse war with jailbreakers, why would anyone be surprised when the cat swipes its paw at the mouse? if you're going to cat-and-mouse with a wily mouse, you might as well be a wily cat.

I'm so fed up with them. I'm glad I sold their stock when I did. They're going to start sinking before too long. They piss everyone off, and they have become far more obsessed with form that function. D**NIT!

@JeffEd: This is a perfect example of how Apple is obsessed with function in a bad way. If they weren't, then you could install Leopard on any $100 box and feel free to run any application on their phone to reduce battery life and otherwise mess with it's intended design and functions.

@madog: I don't think he actually said he hates Apple, but that he is glad he is running XP, the two are not mutually exclusive.

When I read this, I said to myself "what dicks, i'm glad I have XP". And, really, this seems like a pretty ok reason to have negative feelings towards Apple. It's a totally unnecessary dick move on their part.

The whole fight against jailbreaking borders on silly; they should know by now that they simply will not stop this from happening and will likely only alienate people, like myself, who are interested in getting a Mac if it weren't for their unreasonable pricing.

@madog: Yes, because a company that claims so much openness and a model that "isn't Windows" is doing exactly what Microsoft used to do: tie everything together in a neat little package and hold it. If Microsoft had a phone and did this, everyone would be raving about how bad it was, but since it's Apple, it must be OK.

@Colin Bean: Apple has never been about openness and always about closed system tied in only to their hardware. Otherwise, Leopard would legally be allowed to be installed on non-Apple hardware, and Apple wouldn't have put an end to clones. They didn't even want to make their first computer with ports as to not allow people to even plug in third party hardware to their systems.

They refuse to be like Windows in that they close their software up so they don't have to worry about supporting 100 different hardware manufacturers. It has always been as such and none of this should really surprise anyone.

@madog: Windows used to prevent other web browsers from being installed on their OS. While that may be somewhat similar to this, Apple is merely not allowing unauthorized software on their phone as they have already allowed third party software on it through the App store; ultimately they're attempting to prevent the unauthorized use of unlocking the iPhone as to protect their and AT&T's assets, which is done also through the Ownage tools but hasn't been perfected for the 3G (yet). This is just a quick and easy method for them to counter the devteam's inevitable goal.

I'm not saying I condone Apple here (though it doesn't affect me), but I'm just trying to explain that this doesn't seem strange or unusual to me as it has always been Apple's stance. As I replied to another post, there are plenty of perfectly good reasons to not like Apple. This reason just seems stupid and moot as it has always been.

Erm, what debate? I agreed that it was a troll and it did a pretty good job of attracting passionate responses from people from something as stupid as "lol apple sux." And it's a valid response to someone saying "fail troll fails," because apparently the dude did a pretty good job at trolling.
