first, we're nearing saturation point for people willing to move to at&t for it. if they're developing a new iPhone on their own, it wouldn't be tied to a single carrier like at&t.

second, it'll be cheaper and combined with the first point, it will bring more people on board for Apple's TRUE moneymaker... the App Store.

it just makes more sense now than it ever did. a subsidized, $99 iPhone nano available on T-Mobile or in a CDMA variant on other carriers, or unlocked from the Apple Store for $250 and works with PAYG plans. they could double their App Store revenue with the influx of customers that could now have an iPhone of their own.
