I have actually liked my Sprint service, have used it for years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Excellent coverage. No dropped calls. No service/support/billing issues.

But add me to the list of defectors. As of this weekend I am going with an iPhone--which means, of course, a necessary switch to ATT.

@Christian Mørch Frederiksen: The bottom line is American's like to pay nothing (or next to nothing) and slowly pay off their 'debt' over time. So, a two year contract that gives you a device for "free" or heavily discounted is a vast improvement over paying the full price for the device at the beginning of a contract. Never mind the fact that we pay ridiculous sums of money every month to pay off that "free" device -- it is better than having to spend hundreds on day one.

Personally, I hate the American "debt" philosophy with everything. Save your money until you can afford the device, and then go buy it. But, alas -- this is the American way.

Kind of difficult to keep customers when your coverage sucks and you don't have any really good phones.

@turwaith: The customer service was shit when I left them. It was when T-Mobile was still getting big in the states. From 1998 to 2003 I was a Sprint customer until they called me a liar. The was a grandfather clause in my contract that was allowing me to get the first minute of incoming calls for free. I put the phone on a 1 month vacation after confirming with them that I wouldn't loose my plan. I come back and re-enable my account and they tell me that I could no longer get my plan back, I had to restart with a two year contract and that there's no record of me ever calling then. So I escalated the issue to the manager and asked the same questions including how the hell did I switch to the vacation plan if I never called in? He then said he doesn't know. I said that should be on their records and he responded that it isn't and I was lying. I clearly wasn't canceled, they just wanted me to select from the new plans. They treated a customer of 5 years like that.

I don't like for people to suffer and loose their livelihoods but this is the chicken coming home to roost for Sprint.
