UPDATED

This one, called "Broken Promises" is a walk down Windows memory lane. (The real question: How long has the "Hodgman—Miami Vice attire" Post-It been on the writers' bulletin board?)

The next one, called Teeter Tottering, shows a cute woman trying to ditch a clingy PC. (Don't they know who we're rooting for here?)

This final one, PC News, has a Rob Lowe sound-alike explaining to Hodgman why people waited until Windows 7 arrived to switch to Macs. (I love Macs, but anyone who waited out Vista can handle Win 7 just fine.)

<![CDATA[John Hodgman: "Barack Obama Is the First Nerd President"]]> The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.John Hodgman, now perhaps best known as the PC in the "I'm a Mac" ads, spoke at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner about nerds, Trekkies, and President Obama's favorite "name-brand smartphone [he] shall not name, for contractual reasons."

In this video you will learn of our President's enthusiasm for comic books, see a photo of him imitating a statue of Superman, and watch him flash the Vulcan sign.

Indeed, John Hodgman. It is an exciting time to be a nerd. [Collegehumor, Thanks Julian!]

<![CDATA['I'm a PC' Guy Interviewed, Confirmed Dorky ]]> Sean Siler is Microsoft's employee and "I'm a PC" guy, the response to Apple's long running PC parody famously acted by John Hodgman. Don't get us wrong. There's little to no content in this interview, but you get a good look at Siler sans brown jacket. Plus, you get to see what his hair normally looks like. (SPOILER ALERT: He slicks it back Gordon Gekko style). [via CrunchGear]

<![CDATA[So What's Up With That New 'I'm a PC' Guy, Anyway?]]> Do you want to know a little more about Sean Siler, Microsoft's version of Apple's PC parody John Hodgman? Of course you do! Luckily, the latest Microsoft commercial had his email address right inside, and you can email "him" at sean@windows.com. But we saved you the 10 seconds and sent the email ourselves. Here's his response, listing personal factoids like his real background as a Microsoft Program Manager and penchant for brown suits:

Hello! I’m a PC – and I can’t answer your email right now. I’d like to say that I’m out climbing Mt. Rainier or biking across Europe with the Swedish Beach Volleyball Team, but in fact I’m probably just chained to a desk somewhere in the depths of Redmond pounding out product specifications.

Now that I have been in a commercial, Microsoft has given me access to super-secret “BillyG” level of executive resources. That’s right – I have my own email auto-responder!

This, as you have probably surmised, is my pre-prepared auto-response (All natural, no filler. No animals were harmed in the making of this response. Except for a ferret.) I really would like to have answered you myself, but if I did, (a) I’d probably get no work done, and (b) then I’d get fired, and (c) then I’d have no chance of doing any more of those really awesome commercials.

So let me try to prognosticate a few of your questions and answer a few of them.

Why did they put you on TV?

I think it’s my devastating good-looks and animal magnetism. No, really – there’s a ferret stuck to my leg right now.

But really – you aren’t even an actor!

No I’m not. But I play one on TV. I really am a Microsoft Program Manager. I work on IPv6, and other things that you haven’t heard of.

How did you get selected?

I auditioned along with a couple of hundred others. I guess I looked very Engineery. And the ferret probably helped.

Are you interested in more acting?

Oh no, I think that Engineering is MUCH more fun.

What’s with Windows Vista?

You’ve been watching those commercials again, haven’t you? Windows Vista rocks. Listen to real users, not actors.

-The Real PC, Sean Siler

<![CDATA[Seinfeld and Gates Are Out, "I'm a Mac" Counterattack Ads Are In]]> Alas, the Abbott and Costello-esque partnership between funny man Jerry Seinfeld and billionaire nerd Bill Gates is now officially over, after Microsoft decided to go with a slightly less ambiguous advertising campaign. (As probably planned, contrary to what's floating around the internet tonight about pulled Seinfeld ads.) In their place is a direct shot at those Apple “I'm a Mac” ads, where a Microsoft engineer resembling John Hodgman's character greets you, “Hello, I'm a PC, and I've been made into a stereotype.”

What comes next is a parade of everyday PC users—scientists, fashion designers, teachers, and celebrities (like Pharrell!)—who talk about how much they like using computers that run on Microsoft operating systems and software. The vignettes, none of which are online right now, are supposed to be quick and upbeat... probably similar to those old Mac Switch ads?

As a Windows user who was deeply puzzled by what message the Seinfeld + Gates ads were trying to espouse, I'm glad they're going with a more informative, if conventional, approach. My biggest problem with the “I'm a Mac” ads were that they weren't, in any sense, grounded in reality. I don't look like John Hodgman. I use my computer for more than just spreadsheets. It's nice to see Microsoft's campaign reflect that. [NYTimes]

<![CDATA[John Hodgman: PC Guy from Apple Ads Way Smarter Than Mac Guy]]> Radar interviews John Hodgman, you know, the PC Guy from the Apple ads. And reading it makes me feel just stupid. You know he works for the Daily Show, but did you know he's a full fledged NY Times Magazine editor and writer, and was a reporter for NPR's This American Life? Justin Long, the Mac Guy, is best known for working with Lindsay Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded, Vince Vaughn in Dodgeball, and his cameo on That 70's Show. Well then.

I guess PC users are really smarter than Mac users. (flame on)
Actually, he's a Mac guy, so I guess its the other way around. (blazing inferno on)

John's Mac-love, as chronicled in an interview in The Phoenix...

I bought the very first Mac, or convinced my father to buy it, in 1984. I used it through high school and college; it was the first computer I used outside of college, then I went though a brief period of exile during my corporate years as a professional literary agent, where I was forced to use a PC . . .Mac has always gotten the design and the interface down pat. They just know it. PC's efforts to emulate this, and its constant failing, and its self-satisfied arrogance about it being the most used platform in the world, all of that made it very easy to craft a character who, while he is a boob, and often concerned about how he comes off, at his core really feels bad for the Mac. Is really so delusional to believe he's much cooler than the Mac. The whole reason they're standing in that white room is because he's trying to help the Mac out.

<![CDATA[The Internet Is Not A Big Truck: Featuring John Hodgman]]>

This Daily Show clip kicks the point through with a double-foot-to-face-stomp-of-fury that the internet is not a big truck. The clip stars our favorite Apple PC vs. Mac commercial actor and Daily Show "resident expert", John Hodgman, and tells us in G.E.D. terms what Net Neutrality really is. The best part? The throwout to the Apple ads, and the huge audience reaction afterwards.
