I have sugestted this over on Consumerist, and I will suggest it here. Fainting Goats were bred so that when a predator attacked a flock, their muscles would tighten up, they would fall over, and they would be picked off by the predators. This saved the flock and allowed them to live on. As Spock said, The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.
So we should breed fainting kids. When a kidnapper runs into a gaggle of children, they tense up, fall over, and are picked off, leaving the other children un harmed and unmolested. It's a win-win. #mamorino
@GitEmSteveDave_Hates #DoucheDad: Or, we could develop miniature weather balloons that each kid could carry in their pocket. That way, when they are approached by said predator, they can fly away and later be recovered by the police in their family attic. #mamorino
@GitEmSteveDave_Hates #DoucheDad: I guess we should train the kids who come from ugly parents. It would be a shame to lose a future good looking adult. #mamorino
@Yuppers I love you, GitEmSteveDave: I also once had the idea of a small balloon which was remote controlled, so if you lost your child in a crowd, you could locate them. Then someone reminded me about ceiling fans. #mamorino
If I'm going to be running my phone on methanol, I want to be able to add headers, new cams, a bigger manifold, and maybe a blower if anyone's making a kit for it.
@betterdays: Given the amount of power it produces and the tiny amount of fuel, this is actually producing much smaller carbon output than plugging in the phone, since the carbon output to create the grid's electricity is very high.
@betterdays: I'm sure this little thing produces far less co2 than the power plant that would have otherwise charged the gadget. (not that i believe global warming is anything more than just government scaremongering.)
@betterdays: also, stop eating beef, travelling by car, eating food that has travelled in a vehicle, using electricity from the power grid that has any chance of coming from a coal powerplant, shopping at stores that use electricity, lighting fires.
Also, stop all those damn volcanoes from erupting and those dead bodies from decomposing.
So we are going to squirt a liquid which is more volatile than gasoline, and also corrosive, into a device with Li-Ion batteries which are known to over heat/burst into flames? What could possibli go wrong?
@Weon: Carrying around a little bottle everywhere you go would be annoying. Power outlets are everywhere already. Also, you are squirting a corrosive liquid into a small hole. I just think battery technology will get much better so things like this will never take root.
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher: : That's a prototype. I'm thinking they'll have a better way of adding the methanol, like capsules, if this ever goes into production. Also, one benefit it has over the current chargers is speed. Refill the fuel and you're good to go. You don't have to stay plugged in for an hour or two.
Is a Wi-Fi card that size even large enough to have an antenna effective for the wavelength? Wolfram Alpha says the wavelength is about 12cm for 2.4GHz...
If Verizon gets religion and starts including WiFi in more (all?) their data devices the I would agree that this wouldn't seem too useful in cellphones, as the writer suggests. BUT, if things don't change, then this would be very useful. Today it would be perfect for the Storm and the Tour.
Speaking of WiFi, can someone with some technical knowledge explain why data devices (iphone, BB etc.) don't have 802.11N yet. I mean, it would be a much faster experience, right ?
@RemembertheAmiga: Power, maybe, but mostly the fact that it's unnecessary for now. Processing power is already the main bottleneck in web browsing, not 802.11g.
@RemembertheAmiga: Correct me if I'm wrong but I also believe that currently the Eye-Fi technology (and this new product since it's similar) does not have the ability to be a two way wifi device. I believe they are only used for uploading files. Although it would still be helpful to have this ability in Verizon data devices, it think it would be even better if there was the ability for two-way data transfer.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: They are only used to upload files with the EyeFi cards, but the device has to be capable of both sending and recieving to be able to send anything over a network. TCP will not work if you are just sending or listening. So this new card might allow us (since we know it has to be capable) to use it as a wifi connection for the phone. Perhaps through some applications?
@TeriyakiChicken: Yeah that's a good point, I always thought that was weird. I wonder why Eye-Fi limits it to one way communication. I would be cool to see your camera as a wireless device on your computer and be able to add/delete photos and files from your computer. They could surely make a lot of money if they added a two way functionality. Especially for things like digital photo frames and any other appliances/devices. You could literally control/monitor a lot of things in your home.
Although I understand that Murphy's law predicts continually increasing storage and a continual decrease in size of the storage medium, I do think they should really stop at MicroSD for removable storage mediums. I don't care how small they make non-removable drives but if the removable ones get any smaller there needs to be an addition to Murphy's law which states that the smaller these damn things get, the easier they are to lose.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: Sure you don't want a mini-pico sd card that holds 50TB and fits on your thumbnail, where if you sneeze at the wrong moment you could loose all your mp4 video archive to your orange shag carpet? Whats wrong with you!
