In reply to FCC Chief Blasts Obama's Call to Delay Digital TV Changeover
Even when things get all switched over, people will realize just how crappy digital broadcasting is over the air. Even only being a mile away from a broadcast tower, my reception is glitchy as all hell. I can't imagine how bad it has to be for those folks that live in the middle of nowhere.

@Gianni Manganelli: Well, the best way to explain is like this:

Analog is like Facebook comments on Gizmodo.

Digital is like "regular" comments on Gizmodo.

So, Digital is better quality and more substance. True, there are some exceptions, but in the end, phasing out analog would help us all out.

@Gianni Manganelli: Analog takes up a ton of spectrum. Arguably, the broadcasting spectrum belongs to the public and it is the FCC's stated purpose to oversee its proper administration. Because the amount of spectrum is dwindling, old areas that are being used by obsolete technology are being repurposed to be more efficient. OTA analog TV signals is not an efficient use anymore.

Also, lobbyists paid politicians a lot of money. That's called lobbying. Looks like a bribe, sounds like a bribe, but it's lobbying.

    Folks,

I work at a Radio Schmack within stones throw of two retirement communities.

I have to explain this shit several times a day.

I just about busted a gut laughing at this superbly made video.

They've nailed it and I'm GLAD the chairman saw it!

@daversW: When I moved a few months ago, I didn't bother to subscribe to cable (just DSL) and the only broadcast TV I watch now is over-the-air digital, via a converter box.

The first converter box I got wouldn't seem to power on, so I exchanged it. Turned out the only way to power it on is with the remote.

In reply to FCC Removes Porn-Blocking Restriction From Nationwide Free Wi-Fi Proposal
I'm not usually pro-censorship, but a porn filter may not have been that bad of an idea. Considering almost 90% of all internet traffic is porn related, I'm not too keen to have so much tax money paying for porn bandwidth.

Although, I'm also not too keen on nation-wide WiFi at all. The less the government is in charge of the better IMO.

@LastAndLeast: I guess so. Googling I found the following:

19% of all traffic is porn-related. This isn't actual bandwidth stats, though, just sites visited.

In any case, I'm agreeing with admoseremic here--why should my tax dollars go to someone's desire to wank? Srsly.

@kahri: It depresses me when I think of all the aggravation that could be saved if politicians just lived by a few simple rules:

Never say or do anything that you don't want to read about on the front page of the New York Times.

Assume that anything you say is being recorded, transcribed and uploaded to YouTube.

Pay someone to maintain a running tally of positions you have taken in the past. If you're really good, you can call them an intern and not pay them anything.

If you get caught doing something illegal, accept responsibility, express remorse and never use the passive voice to describe your mistakes.
