    Theft or hacking is the only thing i'd be worried about, but it would sure be nice to have on winter mornings!

    Seeing as my Insight was free, I like it. I love the steering (teeny turn radius). Also, the key to driving a hybrid is, believe it or not, jamming on the gas to quickly accelerate. It's why the Insight has an electric assist motor.

    This reminds me of a car alarm system from back in the day that had a beeper with it and would page you if someone was trying to break into your car.

    "no line of sight contact necessary, not that the iPhone has the IR hardware for anything like that anyway."

    i wonder if this can be done without silly annual fees over wifi. sure your car has to be pretty close, but i dont see any other real obstacles.

    question - which has greater range on iphone/ipod touch: wifi or BT?

    (and is it any better than a regular RF Fob? my guess, no)

    so... this app is for people who live kind of far from where they park, eh?

    I still maintain that this is a bad idea. If you break/rundown/loose your phone you are stranded. Technically impressive but practically flawed.

    @Xeno: I feel like not many people would use this totally instead of keys. It's easier for me to pull out my keys than my phone and start an app. This would be really good for cold winter days when you want the heat going, rainy days when you want the door unlocked, hot days when you want the a/c on, etc. before you get to the car.

    I had a paging system installed on one of my cars years ago- it would alert you if the alarm was tripped. If this had push notifications I would spring for it.

    @dnono: You can bypass a clutch for remote start. You can even install sensors that won't allow the car to start if it is in gear, or the e-brake isn't engaged.

    @leavethegun-takethecannoli:

    yep. so long as it's in neutral, the only thing that the clutch has to do with it is a little switch that closes when the clutch is in, which is easily bypassed. good to do if you ever think you'll be in the unfortunate position of starter-motor-throttling to move the car for some reason if it wont start.

    I live in South FL, I hope that by "turning on the heat", you mean it can also turn on icy cold A/C or roll my windows down.

    Wicked use of technology. This is the kind of stuff I've been waiting for from smartphone devs.

    @Mike Zuniga: That was Unexpected:

    Or people could just not lose their $200+ smartphones.

    Sorry to rant, but I'm always amazed when I hear of incidents like that. Locking it in your car I get, but leaving it somewhere unattended? At that point, why don't you just leave your actual car keys, birth certificate, SSN, driver's license, credit cards and passport, too? These things have tons of personal data on them; in most cases, probably more than enough to steal your identity. I can't wrap my head around how some people don't treat it with at least a little respect.

    @Mike Zuniga: That was Unexpected: You wont be able to steal the car, as like most remote starters im sure you need the key to actually drive away. however you could be worried about the unlocking, and stolen goods contained therein.
