<![CDATA[K-Mart Confirms $300 PS3 Slim Rumors With Some Subtlety]]> While we're waiting for Sony to announce a cheaper, slimmer PS3 during a press conference later today, K-Mart has this announcement on their front page...now. It looks like we get a new model and price drops on old PS3s. UPDATE:

K-Mart now has a pre-order page up as well for a $299 Slim (the same pricing we've seen leaked before...by K-Mart. Either they're the biggest screw-ups in retailer history, or Sony doesn't mind (and has even encouraged) the leaks. [Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Xbox 360 Price Cut Leaked By K-Mart Weekly Circular]]> A forum user High-Def Digest just posted a scan from next week's K-Mart weekly circular ad showing a price drop of $50 on the Xbox 360 Premium. The $299 price still includes a 20GB hard drive, and the timing of this supposed price drop matches up with whatever announcements Microsoft is going to have at E3—some of which which are rumored to either be a price drop or a newer version with slightly bigger storage. Kotaku points out that there's no price drop for either of the other two models, but with the Arcade sitting at $279, it seems more than likely that Microsoft will lower that as well. <![CDATA[Dealzmodo: $20% off at Kmart Means PS3 For $319, Xbox 360 Premium For $279]]> The folks over at the Blu-ray.com forums found a great Kmart coupon that gives you 20% off on any one item. Being Blu-ray fans, they naturally threw their cash at the PS3, which will be $319 after said 20% discount. Not interested in the PS3? You can print out the coupon and try your hand at the Xbox 360 Premium ($279) as well, or even stuff like HD DVD or Blu-ray standalone players! Coupon works in store only. [Blu-ray - Thanks Dom!]

<![CDATA[Kmart and Target Black Friday Ads Up]]> Blackfriday.info has both Kmart and Target's Black Friday ads up, showing off girls' sweaters ($7.49) and eight piece luggage sets ($49 - great deal!), but what you really care about are electronics.

Well, over at the 'mart, they've got a Polaroid A801 8-megapixel camera for $79, as well as the Wii for standard price, Guitar Hero II Xbox 360 bundle for $59 and three PS2 games for $8.99. Target's game list is slightly longer so we won't list them here, but their electronics deals have an Olevia 37-inch 1080i HDTV for $549, which is a pretty good price for those of you just getting into the HD game. Be prepared to fight both the cold and other cheap people if you plan on lining up for these deals. [Target via Kmart]

<![CDATA[Every $99 HD DVD Player Losing $500?]]> You might have heard about those $99 HD DVD players that were being sold for a moment at Wal-Mart and Best Buy. You're probably smart enough to realize that Toshiba isn't making much scratch on these things, but for reference, the first HD-A1 HD DVD player cost Toshiba $674 in parts alone (Says iSuppli, 2006). So are they losing ~$500 bucks on these newer player selling for less than a C-note?

Within a calendar year, I very much doubt that it could have been price-optimized more than 30% (*number pulled out of thin air). Either way, it's pretty clear that Toshiba is losing at least a few hundred dollars on this $99 deal for consumers, and maybe over $500 bucks including all costs. Is this sale desperation? Or have they moved on from the early-adopter battlefield and straight into the Waterloo of mainstream buyers? Maybe it's just a stunt, since most places sold out almost immediately. What better way to win the hearts and minds of cheap Americans than to hold an insane sale on a sliver of all of your inventory?

I have no evidence either way. This is an older model. Comments below bring up the point that the retailers could be clearing shelf space and moving inventory, sucking up the expense. Either way, no one knows but Toshiba, the retailers and no one is talking.

UPDATE: Toshiba, apparently, had nothing to do with this move. Walmart cut price to clear shelves and the retail competition followed, while Toshiba shrugged their shoulders.

<![CDATA[Kmart Going HD-DVD Exclusive (Except the PS3)]]> Kmart loves the Toshiba HD-A2 player's $200 price, so they're going exclusive with it, meaning no set top Blu-ray players. Makes sense, considering Kmart's market. Of course, this isn't really exclusive while the PS3 is on shelves with it's Blu-ray capability. So don't read into this too much. The format war isn't close to being over, although this will certainly help HD-DVD. And considering that those new hybrid disc players are coming, it may not matter for those willing to shell the bucks. [Home Media Mag]
