The Kohjinsha SX Series is a 2.8lb laptop with a few interesting quirks. Powered by an Atom processor, the 8.9-inch Vista system can convert to tablet with the rotation of the convertible touchscreen. And to make sure you can teleconference in either mode, the system features two cameras to capture those dazzling whites. The 1GB of RAM will need a boost, but the 60GB hard drive, internal DVD writer and expandable multicard reader do a lot to make up for it (and if only we could take advantage of that 1seg tuner...). Buy it now for $1,199.00. [DFJ via jkkmobile]

<![CDATA[Kohjinsha Adds SSD to UMPC, Still Lame]]> Kohjinsha have updated their UMPC product line with the introduction of the SH6KPS3ABX model. The new addition to the family brings a welcome progression, a 32GB SSD.

The device boasts an otherwise yawn-worthy specification: Weighing in at 993g, it will incorporate an Intel processor A100 (clocked @ 600MHz), 1GB RAM (PC2-3200), a 7.0" TFT LED touch screen liquid crystal display (1024x600), 802.11b/g Wireless, Bluetooth 2.0, an integrated media card reader, two USB 2.0 ports, a 1.3MP camera and a TV tuner that is redundant outside of Japan. The battery has a reported 3.5hour runtime, which likely translates to 1.5minutes doing anything useful.

With the specifications as they are you will probably not want to go down the Vista route. However, there is something promising to come of this nonetheless:

The UMPC market is sure to adopt the more robust SSD storage medium, but has until now, been slow to do so. Understandably, cost is an issue as the ridiculously overpriced Samsung Q1 demonstrated. Kohjinsha are set to be one of the first in the market to utilise the SSD, again it shall be at a price; starting at $2,084.83, it is not really making any improvement on the financial feasibility of the medium. At least then, the SSD has taken the first few steps to ubiquity that shall secure its prevalence in the future. [Product Page Via Akihabara].

<![CDATA[Kohjinsha SA1F00V: 7" tablet UMPC Adds Touchscreen, Still as Slow as Before]]>

Kohjinsha has added touch capabilities to the 7" 800 x 480 screen on its Japan-only SA1F00 UMPC tablet computer, letting you massage your way through Windows XP Home even when it's running as slow as Keanu Reeves putting frozen Heinz Ketchup on a bullet-time burger.

That's because rather than jumping on the Ultra Mobile 2007 platform bandwagon with their new model, they just decided to keep the same 500 MHz AMD Geode LX800 processor. At least they painted it KITT black, probably hoping that the new color will add some TurboBoost to it (replacing XP for Linux would have achieved the same without the need for leather pants). In fact, all the specs remain the same, with 40GB HD, 2 USB 2.0 ports, SD, MMC and Compact Flash slots, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. All except the extra 30 grams that push its fighting weight up to 990 grams (2.18 pounds). One pic of the white model, its release dates and prices are after the jump.

The Kohjinsha SA1F00W also has the same features, and both are priced at $840 (this goes up to around $1100 for the 100GB hard drive.) Only the Japanese will get their digits over this on the 3rd of May, so add some extra import dollars if you are planning to get one using Dynamism and the rest of the usual suspects.
