And on purpose. Designer Neil Poulton said he created the array thanks to inspiration from the supercomputer at the heart of 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, aside from that all seeing eye thing on the front, this beast is all about affordable storage, not ending your life.

At the LaCie web site, we learn the 5big has five hot-swappable Serial ATA drive bays that, when fully loaded, can hold up to 7.5 terabytes of information.

There's some leeway on config options too, as the drives can be configured into RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 6, RAID 10 and RAID 0. Additional external drives connect with USB 2.0 or SATA ports.

The 5big works with Windows, Mac and Linux at three different price points. The 2.5TB version is $899; 5.0TB clocks in at $1399; and 7.5TB will set you back $1899. Keep it away from airlocks, just in case.[Technabob]

<![CDATA[ LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra: 1TB in Your Hand ]]> LaCie's LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra has been around for some time, but it's just gotten a major capacity boost. Now the external eSATA/Firewire 800 drive supports up to 1 terabyte of storage by utilizing two 2.5-inch 500GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration. It's not quite iPod-sleek storage, but the Little Big Disk can fit in your hand (pending you can lift 1.4lbs). The new Little Big Disk Quadra runs $659.99. [LaCie via Fareastgizmos]

<![CDATA[ LaCie Rugged Portable Hard Drive Now Squeezes in 500GB ]]> LaCie's Rugged line of portable hard drives isn't the first to cram 500GB into your pocket, but they're betting it's the most protected 500GB you'll ever hold, with a shock-resistant (and ugly) orange rubber bumper padding the internal shock protection. Buffalo's 500GB option is sleeker and has thwack-thwarting tech of its own, but the brickier Rugged probably has more brick-like durability, and it's $30 cheaper, so assess your needs accordingly. <![CDATA[ LaCie 1TB Desktop Hard Drive: I...Can't...Look...Away ]]> So a 1TB external drive is nothing new, but it is hard to deny that this thing is pretty...real pretty. LaCie has been getting heavy into the aluminum casings recently, which may play a factor in cooling, but those devices definitely did not bring this kind of cool stealth technology vibe that is so intoxicating. <![CDATA[ LaCie's Little Disk: Littlest 40GB Drives ]]> Samsung's A1 drives, the 1.3-inch platter models that fit 30-40GB inside, are being shoved into these little LaCie portables, the new Little Disk and in the updated USB Key Max. With this kind of bit density and 2MB buffers, the drives should be somewhat quick despite the 3600rpm spindle speed, and 40GB is no joke, especially in these shock-resistant drives that look imminently pocketable. <![CDATA[ LaCie Adds Neil Poulton-Designed External HD To Classy Drive Roster ]]> LaCie's no stranger to getting designers to fashion up external hard drive designs, what with Sam Hecht, Ora-Ito, Karim Rashid, GmbH and the LEGO guy (actually also Ora-Ito) lending their name to designs. This latest one by Neil Poulton looks like the 2001 monolith sans naked monkeys, but with an eerie blue ambient light on the front emanated by an LED on the bottom. You'd normally have to pay some kind of huge price premium for designs, but LaCie's $149 for 500GB seems pretty reasonable. Ships January. [LaCie via PC World]

<![CDATA[ LaCie Unveils 2big Disks at 2TB Each ]]> Three more big disks from LaCie today, one called the 2big Dual, one called the 2big Triple and the last the 2big Network. They all look pretty much identical except for their connectivity ports on the back, since the 2big Triple has USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800, the 2big Dual has eSATA and USB2.0, while the 2big Network has Gigabit Ethernet. All three are priced exactly the same, with 1TB going for $409, 1.5TB for $619, and 2TB for $939. <![CDATA[ LaCie Bumps Ethernet Big Disk to King Kong-like 2TB ]]> LaCie's giving its Ethernet Big Disk a major upgrade today, doubling its stomach size from 1TB to 2TB. The drive will include 2 USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and support for Windows, Macs, and Linux. You'll even be able to add extra storage via one of the USB ports (should you be that hungry for storage space). I like that the drive is smaller than some of your other options, but price-wise you can expect to pay around the same as some of its competition ($1,099). <![CDATA[ LaCie's 26-inch LCD Promises Dead-on Color Accuracy ]]> Those of you lucky enough to have one of these sitting by your desk will wanna pair it with LaCie's new 526 LCD. It offers a 95% Adobe RGB gamut, which in English means the colors you see on the screen are the colors you'll get when you print something. That's especially important if you're a digital photographer, 'cause it'll match what you capture on camera with what you see on screen, and later print on paper.

The LCD packs a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio. It'll cost you $1,999 when it's released later this month. It's not cheap, but worth the splurge for all you pros out there.

<![CDATA[ LaCie's Desktop FireWire Speakers Take a Page from Super Mario's Warp Pipe ]]> The Skinny Whether they're hooked up to your laptop or your desktop, LaCie's new angelic-white speakers are bound to draw oohs and ahhhs from onlookers. They're tiny, so they won't take up a lot of space and though they won't rival a full-fledged 2.1 system, they do a solid job of pumping out your tunes in a small room.

Geared Toward You've either got an iMac or plan on getting Sony's new TP1.

The Spin Maybe we played one too many games of Super Mario when we were young, but LaCie's speakers remind us of the fat plumber's favorite past time, those infamous warp pipes. Except of course they're not green.

Counterspin Because the speakers are powered directly from your PC's FireWire port, you may not wanna rely on them the next time you buy a keg and gather your friends.
