In reply to LaCie LaCinema Classic HD: 1TB Media Player for $250
They don't list DTS in the audio specs. Sort of a glaring omission. Beyond that, there are others out there that support TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc.

That's a rather interesting add on if only you don't already possess a PS3, XBOX or any other media extender available. It's a shame that they do not include Wi-Fi in, but that probably what makes the thing so terrible reasonable.

Though it makes you think how far we went along for the advance of media streaming. It makes me think that in a near future, physical media such as blu-ray and DVDs will have no use as for media display.

It's already available to rent movies on the net and download them or simply buy them in 1080p quality. So to that extent, it renders pretty much physical media useless.

But it's just a tought, we are still far from everybody having a connection and a probable bandwith to support that kind of market. But as prices on devices such as this are increasing the probability of seeing an all digital future.

What will determine if it grabs market share is if it has a decent UI and if it's compatible with the most codecs.

LaCie + Touch sensitive can only mean that when you touch them, they crash and die. I'm also seeing comforting words in their description like "explodes exponentially" and "magma."

I like the black boxes better. I like it when people come up to my desk and ask "What's that?"
I like black lacquer. I wish the furniture would come back in style.

    Looks more like T1000's ottoman.

Don't trust LaCie drives. They use really shitty chipsets in their enclosures that are prone to having mounting issues, and ultimately no mounting at all after repeated attempts.

@Kaiser-Machead: Really? This concerns me. I just bought one. And my father has several. No problems as of yet...

Were yours older versions? or their newer ones?

@Davy Grolton: Mine were the Porsche drives, but really the low cost of LaCie's peripherals generally means that the internals are shoddy. Some may last you a long time, but after my observation of my own equipment and other people I know that have purchased it, reliability has become enough of a concern for me to never purchase one ever again, same for Western Digital. On top of questionable reliability, their customer service is terrible.

Does anyone know whose drives LaCie uses?

Where are the air vents and cooling fan? I've lost count of the external drives I've seen go belly-up because of overheating, including two of my own. If you get one, be sure to run a HDD temp-monitoring utility and PAY ATTENTION to it. Also remember that S.M.A.R.T. Data CANNOT BE read via USB.
