As emergency back-up for business people, it's good.
The problem is that it should be more widespread than that and for widespread service, the prices need to come way, way down. In Israel, people can get 2.8/1.2 cellular for $35/month, no data caps - a far, far cry from $60/month in the US with a 5 GB data cap.
I've definitely been in situations where I would love to have some PAYG data, and $30 a week or $50 a month doesn't seem too unreasonable. On trips a couple of times in the last year for instance, I found myself with no reliable internet and I absolutely needed it for business. At that point, paying $30 seems like a bargain compared to wardriving for a WiFi connection or trying to hack my iPhone for tethering, only to get 19.2kpbs. It's the cost of the hardware that is the only thing about this deal that I don't like. I'd have a hard time justifying the $250 that they charge for the modem without a contract.
@weatherman: I agree, the moaning about how this is high cost is kind of silly--when you pay for convenience, you usually pay a lot. See, for example, the comment about bottled water. Or take car rentals. Paying for data as you go, on the fly is no different.
Also agree wrt the cost of the modems. I can't see AT&T subsidizing the things when its PAYG. That hurts a lot.
I think this makes an awful lot of sense for a particular class of users and AT&T is pretty smart for doing it. There are times when I'm traveling where I'd pony up the money for a day or week of wireless access. But, I don't get an AT&T card because most of the time I don't need it, and paying even $30/mo for unlimited data isn't worth it. $15 is about what people used to pay for Wi-Fi in an airport. And, yeah, while the data caps kind of suck, I think the audience they are targeting aren't downloading movies, they are probably interacting with email.
And who knows, you get business users used to the idea behind this, they start using it more... Pretty soon its cheaper to take on the $30/mo data plan, etc. I think it is a sharp move on their part.
What's the availability date for this? Does anyone know? cuz I don't see anything on Lenovo's site about a Core i7 option... But I'd like to spec one out to price it #lenovoy550
"On this week's 30 Rock, we found out Jack's (or Jack's designer's) choice of computer," -- Yes, and it's a Mac. The microwave oven designer is using a PC, but Jack uses an iMac - as seen earlier in the episode and in the background of that screenshot. #30rockwindows
@TheSonOfKrypton: I don't know if you're referring to that he should have one--but with the site remod the stars were taken away from many people #30rockwindows
This same thing happened on last nights episode of Smallville. First time in my life I saw a laptop with a giant Windows logo on it. Didn't know they made those.... #30rockwindows
it's possibly one of two things (or both)
1 - 30 Rock has always been pretty up front about product placement
2 - it might be to highlight the differences between Jack and the rest of the characters - Jack = corporate, everyone else = hip, artist types... #30rockwindows
@yule-and-bellow: I enjoyed the comment, but I admit these always leave me puzzled. Are we saying that Windows is crap because they have to sell their stuff so cheap to get anyone to buy it, or are we saying that Apple is way too expensive? Maybe it is meant as a double joke. In any case, I laugh both ways and have a good time, basically, because I don't know any better. #hpbestbuypackage
@Monty: I'm not into taking shots too at companies too much. I just think 3 Windows 7's for the Price of One OSX is one awesome deal. #hpbestbuypackage
I really like Win7, and am super excited about the launch. I'm in the process of choosing my newest Win7 machine.
However, I truly believe that MS is trolling tech site comment boards in a very serious way leading up to this launch. This may not be an example, but I believe it's happening.
I know brands hire agencies to do this, because I'm somewhat familiar with the process and have been involved with it before.
For example: Over at Engadget, virtually EVERY pro-Apple comment has been demoted. I don't believe this would have been the case a year ago.
I much prefer the Giz's handling of comments (promoted vs. hidden), but even it's not impervious to such deliberate "attacks".
And, might I add, I felt the same thing around the time of the Zune HD launch, especially on Amazon.com.
It's a shame because it's deceptive. It's so clearly engineered to skew comment boards & product reviews at a time when MS's products are actually very high quality (i.e. they shouldn't need to do it).
@jfwaterburry: Did you notice that so far (as of the posting of this comment) the only shown comments for this article are a.) one that mentions that you get all that for less than a 13" MBP and b.) that someone else doesn't know whether MS sucks or Apple is overpriced and they don't know any better?
I'd say Giz has a mild case of Engadget's Syndrome. #hpbestbuypackage
@caine3320: Right now, in fact, there's zero comments on this article about Microsoft sucking at all, hidden or not. Actually, all the articles about Windows 7 just seem to have less trolling from Apple fanboys since it's technically not even out yet. Things that legitimately suck, like IE or Windows Mobile have many more negative comments. #hpbestbuypackage
