GIMPaolo would have bought components from Tiger Direct, built his own machine, then used exclusively open-source apps, saving himself hundreds and making Microsoft look silly.
Some would hail him as a hero, but most would just call him a dork.
@Rob Sukiasyan: No, I don't suppose you are. However, being an advertisement and not a documentary, this is to be expected. No harm in that, since it is trying to sell a product rather than be an actual experiment.
That said, if this were done with regular people, I'll bet that a great deal of them would get a Mac simply because they're not paying a single cent for it.
Yay, another reason for PC/Mac fanboys to gnaw at each others legs. I do agree that it's for the Mac computer look that the price is be high (I can't accurately know the cost of Apple parts compared to other PC parts). It's ok for me because I have a few bucks to spend and I'm trying a different computer than my old HP PC. Also, I'm sitting here typing this on my 24 inch iMac. :)

@reluttr: I don't think anyone cares as long as you're making a valid and informed argument. But the entire stance of "TOO EXPENSIVE!" is a strawman defense at best.
PCs have definite advantages in certain areas. But to put all your weight only behind price undercuts the actual benefits of owning a PC and doesn't actually do the platform proper justice.
@Benguin: I think price is just the first hurdle for most people. For someone like myself the price would be higher, at least the cost of a copy of Vista of XP because there are quite a few apps I use regularly that just don't exist for OSX.
@RobotVampire: You know, I think you have a point there. The majority of people don't care about technical aspects, they just want to know how much it's going to cost them. They see the price (be it for a PC or a Mac) and just keep walking.
So often I've had to bite my tongue when family members bought computers primarily based on which one cost less.
Personally, I go to a MicroCenter and price out PC and Mac and I use both.
That said, I have also found that there is an advantage on the PC side if you buy hardware on a pre-built basis, and in come cases, with a disparate advantage when you DIY it, since Apple doesn't offer that ability (short of Psystaring/Hackintoshing your OSX-based computer.)
As an OS agnostic person who uses Linux, Windows and OSX, I'm a firm believer that "The Apple Tax" is alive and well from both a software and hardware standpoint.

@TaylerTesminombre: or the one thats describes what you do when you're drunk (drunk dialing, leaving your freinds to find their own ride home, etc) and assigns them to smoking weed
@shorty6049: Yeah, I always thought the asshat who wrote that commercial must have been high at the time... Uhhh, you got the effects of your intoxicants confused again, jackass...
@MINI Driver: I don't understand why Mac feels the need to advertise against MS, if their product is as superior, and as trendy(?) as they tell us it is....
@bpapa9013 - Is now an ego maniac thanks to his new star ->: I always found it incredibly ironic that Apple was running a multi-million dollar ad campaign claiming that Microsoft was wasting millions of dollars on selling a product nobody wanted.
Recap: 1) Apple has less than 10% of the market. 2) Apple is probably spending 10x as much per user as Microsoft on marketing 3) Microsoft is the one trying to spend tons of money on marketing.. wait what?
Did you just pull that # out of your @$$? Fiscal 2008, Apple advertising budget: $486m; Microsoft: $1.2b.
Their commercials generally target different audiences. Apple -> Direct consumers, Microsoft -> Businesses. And the focus of their ads are not the same either. Apple: iPods, Computers as a whole (Software + hardware) since they control both. MS isn't as much in the hardware game, so it's pretty much all software advertising, except rarely to the general consumer. They've only recently shifted that focus to try and dispel the negative perceptions (not all unwarranted) of the public.
oh, and you're all Big Vaginas for arguing about Macs and PCs. Are you all so bigoted that you can't accept different people want and will pay for different things? You nerds ever look at designer fashions? Cars? Now those things are way overpriced. A freakin purse can cost more than a MBP. Crazy.
Full disclosure: I don't own any Macs or iPods. Not willing to pay for it. Do own some Apple stock though.
