QR codes are certainly practical, but they're also dumb and stupid and ugly and instantly ruin almost anything they're placed on. That's why this tech that uses simple light as a replacement for QR codes is so awesome.
One drawback of LED lighting is that as the bulb's output wattage grows, so too does the chip cooling system. But GE's new Energy Smart bulb's ingenious cooling design packs a 100W of power at a quarter the energy requirements of a standard A19 incandescent.
Switch Lighting believes they've got all the problems with LED lighting figured out. They say their bulb is efficient, relatively cheap and, most importantly, mimics the ambiance of a soft white lightbulb. And they've got Slate's Farhad Manjoo sold on it.
To paraphrase William Gibson, the future of lighting is here, it's just not evenly distributed. Light-emitting diodes (LED) lightbulbs have been coming on the market in the past few years, but their quality varies greatly, from "almost perfect" to "horrible."
It's not the setup for a joke. Jets and light bulbs really do have something in common now that GE is using jet engine cooling mechanisms inside bright, lightweight, low-energy LED bulbs. You'll have to wait to buy them though.
