Space is three dimensional while oceans are two dimensional. Oceangoing battleships have all the guns on the top. In space there is no top so you need guns all around. You just have to sneak up underneath this thing.
That's what I don't really like about the Star Trek and Star Wars ships. Most of them have a definite top despite never having to land.
Now the Death Star, that was a classic space opera battle station. They were always either spherical or teardrop shaped. It's OK to have a back, that's where the engines are.

in the story, IIRC, it was actually the seagoing battleship Yamato from WWII, restored and then retrofitted for space. Which really doesn't make any sense either, other than as some national pride thing.

I don't see any non-stock parts from a quick glance. Really, with the variety of wedge and slope parts that are currently available, it's really easy to build something with smooth, flowing curves that doesn't require custom parts or modded parts. That doesn't mean that neither of those happen, of course, but most of the custom parts are gear for minifigs (armor, weapons, capes, helmets, etc.), plus a smattering of animals and steam-train wheels. Modded parts are too varied to keep track of, but I know of one guy who builds battery-powered lights into minifigs, and one of the guys in our club has cheated double-arches by cutting the end off of one arch and butting it up against an unmodded one.

but is it me, or is that the rebel alliance logo turned on its side on the second photo? towards the bow of the ship -see-[i.gizmodo.com]

That same part came in dark-bley in the Night Crusher and Booster Beast sets from the Racers line (2007), so it's not necessary to use the ones from the Rebel Scout Speeder set...assuming you've set up a Bricklink account. Also, the Rebel emblem is a sticker in that set, so it's _really_ unnecessary to have the emblems all over that ship. The only parts I know of that have the emblem printed on them are a 2x2 tile, the door from a 2x2x2 storage box, a slope from the front of one of the two A-Wing models, and two different decos for the Rebel Pilot helmet.
