Jeremy's got a gun
Jeremy's got a gun
500 lego pieces is not fun
Just 10 more minutes and he's done
What did his neighbor do?
Did he call the police and God knows who?
They say that when Jeremy was surrounded
The SWAT team and a chopper came
But man he wasn't finished
Only 6 more pieces in on desk
Call of Duty is not going to be the same.
As was already mentioned, handguns are illegal in Canada. It is incredibly difficult to obtain one as a normal citizen (legal hoops like crazy), and possessing one is a weighty criminal offense.
@Duckspwn: Owning one is not illegal though there are a lot of hoops to jump though to get one. Carrying it with you unlocked and uncased is another matter.
If you had called the Police in many cities in the US about this they probably wouldn't do anything if you're not seeing the individual doing something wrong. For all the Police know the individual legally purchased the handgun and its his property.
@MrEvil: Ill tackle both of these at the same time.
"Pretty excessive response?"
And "That's a pretty incredible response considering the complete lack of danger."
Really? First it's not a "lack of Danger" there are office shootings, and Ft Hood, and school shootings. In light of those examples the response is pretty much what should be happening. When the call comes in, how in the world is the police to know it's lego? People would be criticizing them the other way if it were real and they sent in a patrol man alone.
Can't have it both ways chris, you can't hedge the response and then say you'd respond that way. IT's double speak.

looking at the picture, what' the first thing you notice. Gun. registering instructions or lego pieces doesn't come up in my mind. It's unfortunate for Jeremy, now, yes, i know it's lego and the person watched him assemble it, making the caller an Ass.

@YingYangCounter: You're right, I should rephrase. I guess what I was going for is that the aggressive response is almost humorous in hindsight. I'll update.
So... why would you call the cops about someone indoors with a gun (who was not exhibiting threatening behavior)? It could have been his and legally owned. Are guns totally banned in this area?
@Mackinstyle: I would love to argue that taking guns away from law abiding citizens who are responsible enough to carry a gun makes things more dangerous, but I'm not in the mood to argue that whether or not you ban handguns criminals will still get the weapons they need/want to prey on a now unarmed populace.
@lostarchitect: You're allowed to own hand guns in Canada. You just can't take them to the office. They're a restricted license weapon. Your house and to and from the gun range is about it.
@bagellord: I would love to argue about the fact that USA's criminality rate and deaths by fire weapon numbers are much higher than in any other developped country (that don't allow guns).
@bagellord: I don't have the numbers, so I can't say for sure, but I imagine criminals use their guns on other criminals more often than on innocents. Anyone have any stats that can confirm or refute this?
@Aweb: That's not a fair comparison to make since we do allow private citizens gun ownership and it's guaranteed as a right in our constitution. Countries that ban guns have their fair share of violent crime even with a gun ban. Its just that the tool of choice becomes something just as deadly and more easily obtained.
Not only that, but we're directly next door to several developing nations with a host of political, social, and economic problems. You go further and further East in Europe towards the former Soviet bloc and I'm sure you see the same kinds of issues.
@Aweb: I'll concede that point, with one caveat. Do the numbers you're using take into account the population/population density of the US versus the other countries?
@RyaninCalgary: Huh. Ok, but still, how was the SWAT response proportional? It seems like if the guy was not shooting up the place or threatening people, even if he had a real gun, responding like that was a little bit insane. Am I crazy here?

This sentence illustrates the difference between Canadian and American police. For the jingoists out there, I am an American.
Cop: "Well, we came all the way out here, so we're gonna arrest you and beat on you for a while, even though you've clearly done nothing wrong."
LEGO afficionado: "But... but... that makes no sense!"
Cop: "I know! I hope you like tasers!"
