    There are several theories that suggest that time travel is impossible because every time a time machine is invented people go to the past and mess something up, which causes it never to be invented.

    So right after we discovered time travel someone went back in time and scared a crow eating a sandwich. The crow flew over a cooling vent and dropped bread into it and POOF no more time travel, yet again.

    @Navin R Johnson: Well, the most accepted theories state time travel isn't yet in existence as both where travelling from and destination both need a functioning time machine.

    What you suggested is a paradox: Someone travels back in time to stop the creation of a time machine THUS stopping themselves travelling back in time THUS the time machine is created [repeat x infinite] #lhcbaguetteincident

    Exactly my point. This very paradox is what keep the LHC from operating!

    If you believe that any time travel to the past would create such a paradox then it follows that any time line that contains an event which allows time travel to the past will have zero probability.

    slashgear said it overheated from 1.9K to 8 K, OVERHEAT? that's -265.15 celsius, that's no overheat!

    interestingly enough. and there might have been a story on giz about it, but 2 scientists theorized that bad luck caused by the "god particle" and a causal temporal paradox might cause future invents like this and the big bang theory. also, this isn't the first time something like this has happened with a super collider #lhcbaguetteincident

    @Illundiel: I prefer to believe that the cosmos thinks that Switzerland is jerks and is conspiring to screw them at every chance. First the US crackdown on Swiss bank account confidentiality. Now bread in the LHC. Next we'll find out that skiing causes ball cancer. #lhcbaguetteincident

    @dingus: it's actually funny and i have to find the article but i remember getting it from docarzt.com(i think). but they used an example for the US and other countries that had built or were building super colliders and weird stuff would just happen.
    in an unrelated note, i am an accountant and switzerland is being "more open" with their banking tax shelter regulations now...kind of #lhcbaguetteincident

    I work at a Department of Energy accelerator in the US. One day the power went out and the electrical experts investigated. Inside the megawatt transformer housing was a big burn mark on the metal wall. Square in the center was a shadow, of a cat. No sign of the cat, probably never will be either, all nine lives gone in one go. #lhcbaguetteincident

    The sky was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to return soup at a deli! I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast appeared before me. I tell ya he was soaring ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big chirp. I said, "Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized something was obstructing his flying. From where I was standing I could see directly into the eye of the great bird! Then from out of nowhere a huge gust of wind lifted me up, tossed like a cork and I found myself on top of the LHC face to face with the busbars. I could barely see from all of the wind blowing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand in and pulled out the obstruction!

    Has anyone read the article from the NYT about how two physicists wrote an article about how the higgs boson is so unstable it may be sabotaging the LHC from the future?

    Just saying...
    Statistically, a piece of bread could materialize out of thin air at some point somewhere if all of the right pieces of matter just happen to come together at the same time. With a little helping of crazy ape-sh*t from the future higgs boson, doesn't seem so far fetched does it.

    The best part about researchers is that even if they know it's bad (as in this case... a partical is coming from the future to stop its own existence, i mean cmon, if that doesnt put up red flags then I dont know what does) they keep at it until they know every little detail regardless of the consequences (nukes). #lhcbaguetteincident
