just curious, would a 5400rpm HD (in an enclosure) connected through usb 2.0 be enough to drive 1080p? that is the nerdiest sentence i've ever typed, by the way...
@AlexSea: Then you've got some nerding-up to do, son. ;-)
1080p that you have on your computer is likely highly compressed using some sort of MPEG codec. The throughput needed is pretty low. USB 2.0 and 5400 RPM will do juuuuust fine.
Just to reinforce some other comments made here. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY. Seems the complaints about there customer service are far reaching: [consumerist.com]#macpaddreview
@crumb: I'm not sure the balance has tipped toward that being catching up, since there are a still a lot of media-centric phones on the market with proprietary jacks. But yeah, soon it'll be a given.
Personally, I can't wait to play with one. I still love my i910 Omnia- it is the best phone I've ever had, and the WinMo platform is solid.
First thing you'd need to do is turn off the touchwhiz (not only does it sound like a golden shower, it just sux), the set up a simple today screen, and customize thru the built-in app.
Once you do this you set up the shortcut page and you have 12 apps right there with 2 click access (one click to the shortcut page, 1 click into your chosen app).
Use the app manager to close any open programs either one at a time or all at once- your choice- and you don't have a problem with system resources as you are using a phone, not a desktop.
Multitasking should be a simple thing and as long as you don't have 7 programs running, it works well.
Bumping WinMo for Symbian? Well OK if you want to use this as a semi-work device. Just don't multitask, use powerpoint, expect MS Office to work or mind app hunting for patches.
For the money, I still can't find fault with the i910. Sure, the camera is only 5mp not 8mp, and it ain't gonna capture in 720p, but for $550 less, I'm OK with that.
Bottom line: Omnia's rock, and the learning curve makes you a better user and the phone a better toy.
I bought it about 1 month ago and I'm loving it, huge screen, nice camera, very loud and clear sound from the speaker, etc... Although the game that comes with the phone is kinda stupid. I don't want to drive the car with the god damn sensor, or maybe I'm just stupid and haven't figured out how to configure it properly.
@Pew Pew BOOM: Does the software get much more manageable once you're used to it, or do the quirks just keep getting more annoying? It's clearly a nice phone, but some of those software flaws are downright frustrating.
@John Herrman: I didn't find the software too annoying, maybe because my last phone is a Nokia N95 8GB. However like you pointed out, you do have to go through lots of steps to do one simple thing. Also, I think the screen lock it kinda of stupid too, you need to lock or unlock it with the little key on the side, nothing happens if you touch the screen....nothing. It would be nice if I don't have press a key just to check the time, it is a touch screen phone after all...
PS: Newer firmware fixes the poor audio quality during HD video recording, although it's still a problem when streaming live video with Qik.
If you can live with Symbian touch, the i8910 is definitely one of the best phones son the market today. The capacitive OLED screen is miles ahead of the N97 resistive TFT screen.
@tnkgrl: I hate Nokia's software updater, I just couldn't fix the god damn "error 1720" problem.(Which occurred out of nowhere) When it was time to ditch my N95 8GB, I didn't even consider any Nokia phones.
Panasonic TS1 is not that much of a revelation either.
You have to replace all the seals every year and it's not doable by you or free. Image quality is not that great also. Cramming all these pixels in a tiny sensor is not that good aparently, no mtter the brand. The Canon D10 is quite good but it is very very ugly.
Overall the Pentax could be a very good camera (if they had kept the W60 sensor), but it's simply on OK camera. Not bad at all.
It's not that these headphones won't work with anything else– only that the remote and mic won't work.
Apple's been adding the remote compatible headphone jack to all of their products lately– I think it even works with the newer macbooks.
It doesn't break "listening" compatibility and adds cool functionality if you happen to be using an Apple product.
I use my Apple remote headphones all the time with standard 3.5mm headphone jacks all the time, the remote is so small you hardly notice it and it's nice to have it built in when something is compatible.
@SigmundWellwood: No, it doesn't break listening compatibility, but volume and simple play/pause function doesn't work on a lot of products you'd expect it to. Not a dealbreaker, since they're still nice headphones, but still a notable drawback.
And yeah, it does work with the newer unibody MacBooks.
So, it's a little cheaper and a little worse than the Panasonic TS1? Am I understanding correctly? It's a shame, because I actually like the design of this more than the TS1.
I think alot of people overlook the fact that on WM devices, as outdated as the OS appears to be, you can still load a shitton of free software from the web, you have a massive catelog of apps from WM2003 that all run fine. Plus its as easy to pirate software on a WM phone as it is on Windows, vs trying to jailbreak an iphone.
You guys make it sound like WM will kill one of your pets. With the touchflo, most regular consumers will rarely even see the OS underneath all that skinning, and it works very well.
@Scazza: This is 2009, I think most regular consumers at least somewhat interested in this part of the market will have played with an iPhone. They would NOT confuse this phone with an iPhone or the Pre. Not even close.
Trust me, I'm a tweaker and I love WinMo for the factors you mentioned, however to say that their 'skinning' is a substitute for the complete reworking of what a mobile OS can be is unfounded.
@Joshua Pacada: I completely agree, its not a good substitute, but it is certain useable for most regular consumers. HTC, as a hardware company, have made a fairy nice skin that runs great (check out other skinning apps for WM, see how shit they run).
However, my point is that everyone hates on WM without checking out some of its unique features that even now platforms like andriod and iphone don't offer. Also dont think this is a dig at either of them, I own an iTouch, and i love some of the apps, but having to pay for anything worthwhile, when I can DL for free similar stuff on WM is kinda annoying.
wow. that's pricy, especially for a winmo phone that comes loaded with 6.1! good that they tweaked it so much with touchflo-3d. the old touch diamond was really really hard to use.
And i don't see it as that big of a deal that they removed the front facing camera, because who would you talk to? noone else has video-conferencing capabilities (on their mobiles at least). is talking with ONLY audio really that terrible?

This looks pretty neat, although it's a bummer to hear of the mishmash when you get to a certain depth.

It's a pity, but I guess I will get those premium Apple buds after all if that's the case.
