Computer simulations have already massively transformed our ability to study complicated situations and events. We can study the effects of disasters without having to suffer through the real thing, and we can test out solutions. Running simulated events on powerful computers, based on real-life factors, lets…
The Living Earth Simulator is quite possibly the most ambitious computer project ever undertaken. This all-encompassing simulation will collect all the data in the entire world, to predict everything from the next major disease outbreak to the next financial crisis.
The computers haven't been built yet, so it's not going to happen for a while—but the Living Earth Simulator will be a "knowledge collider" capable of modelling our entire planet when/if it gets off the fantasy drawing board.
