yeah but it's load time to the login... so what? all they do is take out more stuff from before the login and put it after the login. the test is how long it takes for the OS to load and for the OS to be responsive.

The truth about Windows 7 Fast Boot up times.. you have the ability to optimize it to boot to the speed you like. How? If you look at the services there's a new option for status... disabled, automatic, manual, and delayed. Some services simply aren't needed immediately when the operating system loads so depending on how "optimized" you want your system to boot... Windows will set several non-essential services to delayed. These delayed services will also use low priority memory so you don't even realize delayed services are started in the background.

Personally... I think it's genius and should be included as a service pack for Vista also. I like Vista personally and I'm still looking forward to Windows 7.

Thing is, I've noticed with all versions of windows since XP that they get the bootup times down by deferring a lot of stuff until after login. In other words, you get a pretty fast run from power-on to username/password, but once you log in you've gotta wait another 20-40 seconds while other shit loads. Even after all of the elements are painted on the screen and the machine seems ready to go, things remain sluggish for a minute or two while background processes run their course.

ive seen a lot of windows users hating this system because! come on! Vista is like W OS 2000 now. Why would i buy it. Im talking about that 20 % boot time decrease isnt that big and i even more hate those large buttons. My opinion wind 7 = for netbooks and mobile phones

right now, right here: 8yr old laptop with XP, 158 days uptime, hibernates/wakes up in 10 seconds... I couldn't care less about boot speed.

I want to know how to get vista to load in 37 seconds! Mine, even from the beginning, took at least a minute. And its only Business, so it doesn't have the extra features Ultimate does.

but i voted for 2 seconds on the Microsoft "Instant-On" feature!!! damn M$ they never listen to users.

My macbook has never been turned off, and waking it up since opening the led until its ready for my craziness is exactly 3 seconds.

I switched to Macs 10 years ago. I've installed Windows 7 and I can't believe I'm saying this, but they really got their shit together with this release. It's solid, fast and tight even in its current beta condition.

You forgot to mention that Lifehacker received a copy of Win7 on an IDE hard-drive, while the other OSs were on a SATA drive. So, that could play a factor as well.
