    I think Mahoney makes a good point; it's easy for us gadget heads to say "wtf she should know the difference and at least be able to work around it" but a lot of folks don't and it's not just the old folks. Not everyone has a lot of experience hacking together their own PCs and dual-booting (or triple booting) multiple OSs. I'm just trying to imagine how my call with my dad would go if he ordered a laptop from Dell and it came with Ubuntu instead of Windows. It'd probably take about 2 hours on the phone just to figure out he didn't have Windows.. man that would be a frustrating call for both him and me.


    And I suppose it's right to place at least some the blame at Dell's feet, if the story is all true. A support agent should have realized that the person he was talking to had no idea what Ubuntu was and prompted her to replace it with Windows. My guess is at that point she probably would have balked at the price difference though, and maybe that's what did happen and why she didn't switch.

    @Anonymoose: Exactly. Why she thought she could use Linux, I have no clue. I've even tried and failed many times to install the damn thing, but if I did succeed I would have the decency to know that I won't be able to find printer drivers from the manufacturer and everyday stuff like that.


    "Hey, I know Windows well enough. There's a Start menu, and windows that pop up when I click the mouse-thingy. How different could this, lin-nuxe, be? I've heard it has free stuff for it, so without knowing anything else about line-nux, lee-nuex, whatever the hell it is called, I will blindly order it!"


    Basically, these are the kinds of people who start freaking out when their .exe's or their copy of "Windows Office" (and no, they aren't referring to the fact is is for Windows, those people just don't know the f-ing difference between OFFICE and WINDOWS) won't work on their Macs.
