Log homes, especially modern ones, can be both beautiful and functional, and a pleasure to live in regardless of what country you call home, but these log homes are neither of those things. Yes, these are easy to build, but with only a bit more effort, you could have something with a lot more amenities.
Not America, but then Americans hijack everything as cultural signs of their greatness even though most American ideas came from Europe along most of Americans.
What exactly is wrong with this design, I think it looks very nice especially how they look like apile of cut logs, but then any chance to bash the French for not helping in an illegal war eh ? Did you vote for Bush ?
@Fourthletter: Here, let me get those straws for you. You know, since you seem to be grasping at them.
No, I didn't vote for Bush. Either time. But the French are still fun to make fun of. With their tiny chins and mustaches and baguettes and inability to fight a nation that is not England.
@badhatharry: Hey! Guess what? Most French don't have mustaches! By the way, could you please open a history book that was not written by Bill O'Reilly?
Yes it is a sub-structure with log cladding. The log cladding offers superb exterior weathering and fire resistance - thus it is functional. It's not exactly the same as say a photo-veneered mdf panel.
While I applaud your desire for honesty of materiality, this is no less offensive than any building made out of brick today. Bricks are no longer load bearing and there are few masons with the ability to do so. Rather we stickframe the building and apply brick as a veneered skin for weather resistance ... same deal here.
As for windows ... there are the slots along the sides ... I guess it comes down to personal taste, but I think the language is clear and elegant.
@LittleJon: you are correct. good ol' abe wasn't even birthed traditionally. he magically appeared one day from a burning bush along side a river whilst his "mother" was tending to her flock underneath a unusually bright star.
This isn't really conducive to stumbling and growling awake in my flannel and denim pajamas to lumber downstairs while the squaw wife fixes up some pancakes and moose sausages for breakfast.
Only Americans think of maple syrup or Abraham Lincoln chopping wood in Illinois when they think of log cabins. The rest of the world knows better, houses have been made of logs much longer than America has even existed.
@SirDrinksalot: But then, like everything else, us white people here took it for ourselves (As in: The land, Music (jazz, blues, and rock), Turning your ball cap sideways, etc.)
@SirDrinksalot: Psssh, log cabins. The rest of the REAL world knows even better, mud/adobe huts have been made much longer than England has even existed.
@badhatharry: quick history lesson, white people didn't "take" blues and jazz, black people in chicago and new orleans invented it. Jazz is arguably America's finest contribution in terms of culture.
@SirDrinksalot: "Only Americans think of maple syrup..."
American or otherwise, under what circumstances would you not think of maple syrup? Pretty much an all-around ideal solution to any problem or situation.
@badhatharry: Good sir, are you implying that Led Zepplin were not purveyors of fine music that is both pleasing to the ear and pleasing to the mind? Because if you are I must admit that I am forced to lay down my glove and initiate fisticuffs with you.
@korybing: Nope. I'm saying Jimmy Page stole his sound from the black man. Same with Clapton. I only call smooth jazz crap. And if you disagree with that, I will have to accept your invitation to fisticuffs. However, since you are a Zepplin fan, you most likely will not let the likes of Kenny G assault your ears.
@badhatharry: Ah, it was merely a misunderstanding then. But no, we can be friends, united in our mutual disgust of smooth jazz. Kenny G especially, for making the saxophone lame.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to tend to my campfire. I made it out of LOGS, made of WOOD.
05/23/09
not to split hairs, but isn't everything that's made out of wood also made out of logs?
