Don't lay it all on plasma sales. According to Bloomberg, Panasonic sells a wide array of goods, ranging from televisions to toilets. I suspect that Panasonic's latest offering in underperforming bidets is the root of the losses.
Toilet Division has been a loss leader for several quarters and until they can have a breakout model line I don't see Panasonic's Toilet Division's outlook improving.
@PunchesSmallAnimals_GitEmSteve...: Stop trying to cloud the issue Officer SteveDave Mahoney! Just because Jones can make all those pew pew noises to make your ringtones sound much better on your razr doesn't mean you can pull the wool over our eyes!
Indeed. Bloggers sometimes don't know a good things when they have it. You can't get any deeper inside the irritated bowels of that company then I am...
@SchruteBuck: I would talk about what is likely going into this phone, but I wouldn't want to get sued.
I worked there for a few months, and they had some really kickass stuff that they were working on. I could tell you about it, but then I'd have to kill you.
I don't even like Moto phones and I was impressed.
Four years ago I said Sony has great hardware but they can't write sh*t for software. Still true. Nowadays, you can't just have great hardware. Everyone expects their gadgets to hook up to their computers and mfrs better make sure they have that software infrstructure done right. I love my Sony HD camcorder but I threw out every program disc that came in the box and use Apple's stuff.
And then, on top of this they insist on using their proprietary media. Well, are they in the business of selling electronic gadgets or storage media? How many shoppers looked into a Sony camera and ran away when they found out about memory stick? UMD anyone? MiniDisc? The least they could do is not charge an arm and a leg for the media.
Sony needs to get down on its knees and beg Steve Jobs to let Sony inside the iTunes playground. (That's assuming Jobs sees any value in letting them in in the first place.) That means either selling their non-PS3 consumer electronics division to Apple or accepting a strategic partnership with Apple as senior partner.
Because Sony's consumer electronics is in a death spiral. It's slow but it's happening because the future of consumer electronics belongs to the companies who can tie all their products up in an integrated, user friendly, media-and-device management platform. Apple has iTunes which they continue to build on, everyone else has nothing.
Phil Wiser, the former CTO of Sony's US operations, reached a similar conclusion after he was tapped to salvage Sony Connect. "With digital entertainment, you have to think about hardware, software, and services that tie them all together," says Wiser, who managed to heave Sony onto the MP3 bandwagon before leaving earlier this year for a Silicon Valley startup. "But it's very hard to quantify the advantage of good software. If you're in a hardware company and you analyze it from a financial perspective, you just want to do it as cheaply as you can. Software and services are an afterthought."
Funny how they single out Sony in the headline, then state it's happenning to many Japenese companies, like Toshiba and panasonic, that it's nothing they could controll, it has to to with the rise of the value of the yen. I can hear it now, "Lets put Sony in the headline to ignite some flame wars, shall we"? And then they totally ignore the good news, like the fact that PS3 sales were UP 130% over the holiday period over last year, and UP 40% for total yearly sales over last year! Didn't read about that here, wonder why not? They DID mention that PS3 sales were down 18.8% in Nov 08 compared to Nov 07, but then FAILED TO MENTION that in Nov 07 Sony introduced the the cheaper 40 g PS3 at $399, and sales peaked! Sigh. Oh well, maybe you will mention this news, "The 80GB PS3 base model will be cut from $399 to $299 in April", found, somewhere else than this site...
@LandonGalopagus: It's also because Sony and Toshiba took a massive shit in Asian trading overnight.
When your share price loses 7.7% in six hours, you get singled out for being the loser of the day. FWIW, SNE is currently down 3.72%. Also, if you read the NYTimes article, you'd see that Toshiba got singled out as well for dropping 7.4%
Here's a little perspective: When the markets in the US lose 10% in a day, trading gets halted. SNE is on pace to lose a tenth of it market cap in a day. This is on top of losing almost 60% of its value in a year.
Sony isn't just loosing money because of the financiapocolypse. It's also cause they've lost focus, ceding superiority to other companies: Samsung for TV's, Canon for camcorders, Nintendo/MS for games, Apple for PMPs, etc.
@bboysca: Microsoft. While they will not be losing a billion, they also will not have the best financial picture when it is released. This is not a reflection of the products they are making, but a result of a ridiculously bad economy. The only company that is somewhat recession-proof appears to be a fruit in Cupertino.
@Monty: Apple's down almost 50% over the last year. In April, everyone was talking about AAPL 200. It's down about 4% in the last week alone (MacWorld was not kind to the company's stock performance).
AAPL 200 now appears to be a pipe dream - like GOOG 800.
Ok, ok. I'll buy a PS3 if you stop crying, ok Sony? It won't be that bad. I will even buy a few crappy first party games if you makes you put on your big boy pants and wipe those tears away.
@zenpoet: Actually, for every PS3 purchased Sony loses money. They make it up by assuming you will buy alot of more profitable items like their blu-rays & video games.
@cfarag: $500+ price tag. They may have to team up with another company and make a sorta hybrid PS3/computer to save on cost or team with big name games or franchises like Chuck-E-Cheese.
