    I understand that this might be technically illegal, but why is there such general hatred for companies that try to do this? In the end, consumers get more choices and Apple has more incentives to make its products even more appealing.

    @j4ckknife: @Hello Mister Walrus: Because these assholes are making money on other people's hard work. The osx86 community puts out all these hacked versions of the system FOR FREE. These guys are taking advantage of that and not even crediting any of the people who are actually getting these systems working.

    Question: If these companies were to just provide a PC capable of fully supporting OS X, but simply provided a sealed legal copy and you had to do the installation yourself, would they be in the clear? Technically, it wouldn't be a Hackintosh until it's actually installed with OS X, right?

    @ripfire: That's a good question. Suggesting that OS X would work fine on unauthorized hardware would likely draw some balking, but at the same time, consumers would be put off if the language on the page avoided this issue altogether. I'd think that, for the most part, simply selling a copy alongside the computer would be suggestion enough, but it's just so.....shady like.

    @eagles3 bikes because he can't afford his car: I think that would be your best bet. Now saying that it works with OS X is a bit of a hassle, but at the same time, they're not selling Hackintoshes. I believe they can get away with that, but I'm not 100% certain.

    @Kaiser-Machead: they don't have to say anything. just like the Dell Mini is known to be OS X friendly you could put it out through the same channels, the interwebs, and let everyone else do your marketing for you.


    then, like you said, sell them a sealed copy and a PC.

    Eck. These guys are just asking to go bankrupt in legal battles. Why not sell machines that are mac osX capable without the OS. Then simply allow the consumer to buy the OS and avoid a lawsuit. Apple has no real way of knowing who hackintoshes on the consumer end. This would save many headaches.

    Psystar is so fucked now it's not even funny. Antitrust case will never stick to Apple, almost everyone starts with Windows by default & if you wanna be a mac user you have to pony almost double the $$$ for the experience, that being said, there's almost nothing OS X does that windows can't, Windows is not as stable as OS X but hey you get what you pay for

    Can someone give me an analogue (from the computer software industry or somewhere else) of Apple's EULA? I seriously don't think that there has ever been anything like it. Apple will sell you the OS X install disc for $129, but only with the attached condition that you use it on a machine made by them. I would understand if they would only SUPPORT the OS when installed on their machines, but to say that it can only legally be installed on them seems unique and strange (maybe illegal, but I'm no legal expert).

    @VanniGreene: Well obviously you're never going to get any flack from Apple if you build your own DIY Mac. Much of Apple's licensing for OS X is based on the honor system. You can install one disc on as many machines as your heart desires. It won't matter to them so long as you're not making a business out of this.
