So, just to get this straight...

In the third photo ("As a reminder..."), is it an old MBP versus an unibody MB? Or both unibodies? both old, perhaps?

Photographing screens and viewing angles is much harder than pointing a crappy cam at laptops and snapping away. I don't think the pictures do justice to either screen. They just show how different each laptop is at the point the picture was snapped...nothing else really.

To get the best results use an off camera meter for each laptop and ensure the same viewing angle for each in each shot...I'll be you find the macbook still behind the pro but not by that much.

@pcypert: It may be hard (not denying it), but in that Batman Begins shot you can totally see the difference in person, without the camera. Seriously.

I've got an original MBA and a unibody MacBook in front of me now. The MBA is brighter but is MORE directional. Moving your head an inch or two either way really changes what you see. The unibody MacBook is excellent for computing tasks, being bright and contrasty, and doesn't overheat when you play a YouTube video (like the MBA).

I watch my movies on a 60" DLP RPTV and don't give a crap what IronMan looks like on my Gizmodo-surfing tool.

@bobdobbs: i agree that the macbook air is very directional (mine is at least). but i think it does excel in the area of blacks, no?

I have my new MacBook sitting in front of me right now, and definitely think these gripes about the screen are much ado about nothing. I find the screen to be very nice (much better than my old PowerBook)... the pictures Giz is showing definitely do not do justice to how the screen looks in real life. If the screen really looked like the above pictures, nobody would be buying MacBooks, and most people who bought them would be trying to swap them out. I heard the same type of screen complaints prior to purchasing my new 24" iMac... I don't get it, the screen looks great to me. Maybe it's just that I'm not a "pro" user... but these machines aren't really meant for the pro users.

Bottom line, I wouldn't let this post sway your decision in getting the MacBook over the Pro. Just my 2 cents...

@Odomzig: I played with the new Macbooks at the fifth avenue store this passed weekend, and I thought that the viewing angle was not as bad as the pics I saw in the duo review, though the Pro was still better all around. My first run Macbook is inferior to them all, so it's all good.
