From the looks of things, there's no longer any real argument for the Air at all. Compared to the plastic Macbooks, I can see the appeal, since they were flimsier by comparison, and significantly heavier. The new Macbooks totally blow these things out of the water in every possible way. Really, this thing needs a major change to differentiate itself from the rest of the line. As it is, it's a total wank.

I'm one of the folks that lamented the passing of the smaller PowerBook G4 and I like the idea of the Air-because a portable computer should really be portable.

But unless the Air can match the performance of the MacBook, then the premium for miniaturization doesn't make sense.

Compared to the white MacBook, you gain:

Illuminated keyboard

Faster bus

Faster RAM

2 pounds lighter

You lose:

Firewire port

Audio-in jack

Digital audio in/out

Stereo speakers

Optical disc drive

Extra USB port

Faster processor

…and 800 dollars.

@zan: I agree. I wish the Air would evolve so you could get better specs and ports in a portable computer that's really portable, and not one that feels heavy in your backpack.

@GageCrin: If it's a companion device, I'd just say the Macbook, unless you require the graphics, real estate and FW800 for a secondary machine.

throw 4 gigs (or 6 if you can pony up for it-though it's not worth it IMO) of RAM in that macbook and get back to us with benchmarks. I'm certain the MB would come a lot closer to the MBP benchmarks
