And this is one of those things that everyone was up in arms about, but in actually only would effect a tiny percentage of potential users. No one would ever max out their SATA speed with any spinning notebook drive in the world.
Now Apple's in the awkward position of rolling back the firmware to a "downgrade" that actually fixes things for most people, or keeping its current version just for the sake of principal, until it can release a firmware that solves both real world and theoretical speed issues.

Sure, if we're talking about anything that simply latches onto the serial ports, but considering the level of importance of a hard drive with a very standard interface, there is no argument whatsoever. Apple must support third party drives of compatible interface. No exceptions. My guess is that this is simply a fuckup and a subsequent firmware update is in the works to undo this. If not, the dick-factor at Apple HQ is rising exponentially.

Apple has always supported them, they just won't ship you a computer sans HDD and they won't cover the third party one if it breaks, which is good cause they usually come with a standard warranty longer than the computer's anyway.
