Oh, although it's a cumbersome solution if you can get your 360 plugged into a computer with wireless you can get it online that way. It's a little fiddly as you have to set up a shared connection for it but it's a cheaper alternative to a dedicated adaptor. It works for PS3's too, which is useful if you want to connect your PSP to your PS3 via adhoc and don't have access to a wired connection.
Just to note any sort of wireless bridge will do the same job as MS's wireless adaptor too. #gizmodoremainders
I don't find anything that odd about the general premise of there being different tablets with different connections.
I imagine that VZW will offer one for their network, AT&T one for theirs, and the generic one that comes from the apple store would only have wi-fi. Or maybe the device will have the guts for 3G (various bands) and wi-fi and you just pick a carrier.
Maybe not. Now that I typed it out it does seem complicated but I could see it. #gizmodoremainders
@tande04: I don't know about the whole "pick your own carrier" thing, but I'm sure they will be tied to at least one carrier, sort of like 3G netbooks are now. However, there are models of netbooks without 3G, like my Asus Eee that are wi-fi only and are not tied to a carrier.
Where have I seen this from Apple before...iPhone/iPod Touch...? Hmmmm.....
Apple isn't going to "confuse consumers". I'm siding with the analysts in my beliefs about the Apple tablet on this one. I believe one model will have 3g with (most likely) AT&T, and one with just wi-fi.
Some consumers NEED internet everywhere. That's what the 3G model is for. However, I'm sure Apple knows that a HUGE customer base simply won't be attracted to ANOTHER contract on top of their iPhone, which is why they will opt for the non-3G model (as I know I will).
When you think about it, it makes more sense to have two models than just one 3G-only model.
Or maybe Apple will cater to the consumer and let you just insert your SIM to pick your carrier, like every GSM device should be... #gizmodoremainders
@ovil200: There were 3G notebooks and netbooks that were sold without being tied to a carrier well before the carriers started subsidizing them.
My notebook at my old job had a VZW chip in it, just not activated. If you go to customize a laptop you almost always get that choice as well. You pay full price (no subsidy) but you're not locked into anything. Seems like the carriers are starting to get more comfortable with the idea of being just a pipeline.
The only problem might be how much bulk both (three?) cards take up in the tablet. #gizmodoremainders
Dan, you know I love you and all, but I'm just not sure I'm comfortable with an ass-slap.
Also, if the Apple Tablet will keep a girlfriend from leaving, will it get me one. My couch needs a cuddle buddy and I think I'd be willing to pay the Apple tax for one. #gizmodoremainders
@Leonce: Yeah, console gamers are a dumb lot, buying over priced peripherals. They possibly couldn't be sick of sitting at a computer all day using a goddamned mouse and keyboard.
I guess other than the internet, no one can hear pc gamers from their mom's basement eh?
See what I did there?
@StanwayJobo: I never said consoles are a bad thing either. But console gamers will pay out the ass for meh peripherals. If you don't believe me, take a look at the mountain of plastic white Wii addons out there made by Nintendo. And don't get me started on the 3rd party ones either. #modernwarfare2
@planetarian: The Tele is an odd duck but it's design makes sense if you are a guitar player. Lower cutaway to hit the higher frets, hump on the top to help your arm rest on it (this is an old design so there weren't metal shredders and hence no need for double cutaway), solid Ash body for that trebly twang. It's a very comfy guitar to play sitting with no strap. The goofiest part about the guitar shown above is that IT'S A FAKE GUITAR FOR PEOPLE TO PRETEND TO PLAY MUSIC WITH THAT COSTS AS MUCH AS A REAL GUITAR.
@planetarian: not that anyone around here cares about my (or your) opinion... but I'm the opposite of you. I love the way telecasters look - almost as much as I love the way the play and sound!
I personally think it's a crime that the Strat is the typical electric guitar shape in people's minds.
(Even more of a crime is that Tom Delonge gets his own strat model - the dude never plays more than 3 power chords in one song... and don't get me started with his whining....)
@brobot: Doesn't the Tom Delonge strat have a bridge position pickup and a volume pot? And it's like a grand? And doesn't that band suck? I thought so.
@planetarian: Teles are great. Simple design, utilitarian, no extra junk. And, if you pick up a Tele Plus and get dual red/blue lace sensors in there, you've got an axe that can do anything.
@brobot: Obviously, there's a reason these are opinions. =)
I do agree with you on the strat though! It seems like such a generic design. I've always been more of a fan of the Les Paul / PRS body styles.
@badhatharry: I can dig the minimalist approach -- I actually primarily play a Steinberger, and one would be hard-pressed to pry it out of my hands now. Somehow the design of the Tele always put me off to it though.
@USMarty: Yeah, then all you need is years and years of practice, and one day, you, too, can be totally lost on stage at the VFW hall while some jackass yells "FREEBIRD!"
1 year, 2 hours a day, and you'll be able to play competently, in front of people, provided you aren't completely untalented.
the old 'i don't want to spend hours a day for years learning how to play a real guitar' argument is holding less water as the years go on, since many players arguably have put that much time into the game.
@USMarty: why does some one have to say this every time. dont you get tired of trying to convince people that they are not cool or whatever. seriaously every time some expensive peripheral comes out like 10 people have to say something like this. if im willing to pay over $100 dollars for a game toy done you think I would know that? obviously these things sell enough that people are buying them. if they want to its up to them, dont try and mock someone about what they are passionate about, even if its just a video game.
@nutbastard: What about those less musically talented ones? I'm just saying. For me, it has taken 25 years to be able to clap along with people on beat. I can thank Rock Band for that bit of help to get me to that point.
Me personally, I enjoy Rock Band and some Guitar Hero. It is fun, and even better with a group of friends. Though I still rock the RB1 instruments.
It is a hobby people enjoy. Why does someone always have to rain on their parade. Though I would never buy this, some people would because it is something they like to go along with something they enjoy. It is kinda like some of the guys in my other hobby. I enjoy 4x4s and running the trails. Get guys that see a lowered truck and say essentially the same thing to them. It is what they enjoy. They aren't hurting anyone.
I could turn it around and put it this way. Why spend 2 hours a day for 1 year learning to play a real guitar so me and a couple friends can stand out in my garage pretending to be a real rock star? Yeah there is a chance I can take the time, learn, and maybe, just maybe form a band and get signed to a label. But the chances of that happening, very slim. And being married with a kid, I can't just pack up and move to New York, LA, or Nashville and try to get spotted. So I stand in my living room, enjoy playing a video game with some friends, and enjoy the music. All because it is FUN.
99% of players of these games don't think they are rock stars because they can play Rock Band, despite popular belief with the help of South Park.
and i'm all for having fun, to each their own, boats floating with different strokes and whatnot
i was only addressing the notion that people would rather play rock band instead of a real guitar because it takes too much time and effort to learn a real guitar. but then they go and spend that much time or more on rock band, to the point where they're just repeating the same songs, trying for a higher score, until it's not fun anymore. which is pretty much what learning real guitar is like, except that when you're done, you've got a skill that will stay with you forever. a skill that could get you laid, even.
as for learning guitar in order to form a rock band, that's just misguided and naive. people learn to play guitar because they enjoy the guitar - i dont think anyone who ever made it picked up their first guitar and thought, 'great, once i get this down, i'm forming a band, and we're gonna make it!' - they picked it up because it looked interesting.
im not knocking the natural desire for (near) instant gratification, im just saying that to play rock band in lieu of learning real guitar, citing the time investment as the main roadblock, and then spending that much time on the game, is a bit silly.
that's not what he was saying at all. he was saying that it's kind of ridiculous when a toy guitar costs as much as a real one. like if you had a model airplane that cost $500,000 inevitably people would be like, 'dude, you could have bought, like, you know, a REAL plane for that'
@nutbastard: Of course he could buy a real plane and those skills flying model airplanes would totally transfer over to a real plane. I'd trust that guy to fly me anywhere.
I play video games and rock band probably more than everyone who responded to this comment..(maybe)...
I was not at all saying go out and buy a real guitar.
I just meant, wow, the price of these peripherals is really crazy. I'd love to have that, but the fact is you CAN actually buy a real electric guitar at these prices. That's it!
Not about the quality of said guitar, or the time spent to learn to play said guitar. And obviously guys, I know a $110 guitar is a really really crappy guitar.
My girlfriend:" What is that hanging on your wall?"
Me: "A custom 22 PRS with tortoise shell top. It's the guitar I've always wanted, and now I own it. I rule."
(but seriously I do own that guitar.)
ps. reread my original post if you think I was commenting on anything other than price...
@nutbastard: No, it was not over my head. My comment however seems to be over yours. My point was that someone who buys or creates a $500,000 model airplane (I presume it to be an r/c plane) could have spent the money on a real one, so what? The r/c modeler doesn't possess the necessary skill set to fly a real one and perhaps doesn't want to. Same with people who play RB/GH.
Yes, when the price of a toy guitar approaches or surpasses the price of an entry level guitar, it does seem "ridiculous". However, some people just don't want to learn to play a real guitar. For instance, I'd like to get the Ion Drum Kit which costs $300 and can be turned into an electronic drum kit, but I only want it because it's gotten good reviews on the responsiveness for playing RB/GH.
Even still, playing RB/GH in no way equals the same skill as playing a real guitar. I know this, I have no illusions over the fact that I'm playing a game and if I choose to spend a few hundred on a fake instrument, how does it affect you? #telecaster
@TheAlmeida: I saw The Reverend play a couple of weeks ago (along with Motorhead). I was about 10' back from the stage and when Heath went on a run, I just stood in awe. He is an amazing showman and an incredible guitarist.
@OMG! Ponies!: Those guys actually gigged together? I can't believe Earth's axis is still intact.
Since there aren't much amazing shows around here where I live, I'm just looking forward to watch AC/DC in November. For the lack of a berserk Jim Heath, I will at least watch an Angus going nuts at his Jay Cee Ems (boy, do I love guitarists with stage presence).
Must've been an awesome show, congrats for your good taste in music, man.
@met2art: The 360 controller is near perfect as is. Extra programmable buttons are nice, but without wireless I don't think I'll be getting one. N0ot sure how I feel about the thumbsticks being flush with the controller either- that would take some getting used to.
The ps3 controller is too small and the sticks are way too loose. Also, not a fan of their trigger and shoulder buttons. I liked the original xbox controller for size.
