<![CDATA[Make's LED History Movie Is Pretty Cool, Includes DIY Instructions]]> We all take LEDs pretty much for granted, but the guys over at MAKE have done a good job with this movie that shows the history behind the little glowing things. Turns out the Light Emitting Diode was one of those devices that was more or less discovered by accident, during an experiment at Marconi labs into a Cat's-Whisker Schottky barrier diode made from a chunk of silicon carbide: so MAKE, of course, shows you how to recreate that for yourself. Check it out: it's fascinating stuff. [Makezine]

<![CDATA[Under $20 MAKE Electronics Gift Guide Good For Frugal Holiday Season]]> Times may be hard economically, but you don't need to give your electronics-DIY enthusiast friend a naff present, thanks to MAKE's sub-$20 Electronics Gift Guide. In fact, some of the items listed are so neat I'm tempted to gift a couple to myself right now... There's a DIY battery-powered USB charger kit good for iPhones, a tiny persistence-of-vision LED display, solar-powered theremin and more. My personal fave is the Drawdio music-making pencil. There're a few LED decoration projects there too: I think my Christmas tree may end up glittering with some DIY LED goodness this year. [Makezine]

<![CDATA[Maker Faire 2007 Auditions This Sunday]]> The staff of Make and Craft magazine are calling for anyone who has a do-it-yourself project that might be inspiring or inspirational to audition for the Maker Faire 2007. Check out that example above—hey, what is that, an electric giraffe? Yes, indeed it is. The tryout is this Sunday (February 18), and will be held at the Machine Project in Los Angeles. The winners will be invited to share their accomplishments at Maker Faire 2007, a gathering on May 19-20 at the San Mateo, California Fairgrounds.

We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.
Make and Craft editors Dale Dougherty, Mark Frauenfelder, and Natalie Zee Drieu will be at the audition. Keep in mind, you perverts, that this is a family-friendly event, which last year had 20,000 people attending. Keep it clean.

<![CDATA[Halloween Costume Greatest Hits: Headless Marie Antoinette Roams the Streets]]> There's a Halloween costume/tech/food contest going on at Makezine.com, and by far the scariest and most dramatic entry is this headless Marie Antoinette costume. That's just the beginning, though, because there are all kinds of gross foods and disgusting creepy crawlies on that site today. There's even a cockroach cake!

After the jump, see more views of the costume, how this ingenious costume was constructed, and also see what we thought was the second-best costume, good enough to win almost any contest itself.

We thought this Mount Rushmore costume was also impressive, with the whole family all dressed up patriotic-like:
