The dog, who had arrived from Northern Ireland with his chum Paddy, both of them a gift from the Motion Picture Association of America, was one of the newest members of Malaysia's pirate DVD sniffer dog team, had not yet started work, as he had yet to acclimatize to the tropical heat in his new home. Lucky and Flo, the original members of the snooper-doggy-dog team, which rounded up over $6 million-worth of counterfeit DVDs during their tour of duty, had had a $28,000 bounty on their furry heads, foul play is not thought to be responsible for Manny's demise. Nevertheless, a post-mortem is taking place. [New Straits Times via Register Hardware]

<![CDATA[Malaysian Businessman Tries to Smuggle Heroin Through Airport in Laptops]]> We're not sure what's wrong with the old drugs-up-the-anus technique, but a Malaysian businessman tried to smuggle 2 kg worth of heroin inside two laptops. Where he went wrong was using two incredibly old laptops instead of something current, and well, looking suspicious while he did his smuggling thing. The airport officials took his stuff, X-rayed it, and found five plastic packs with said heroin inside. Why this cheap bastard couldn't spring for some gigantic Alienware laptops that are already heavy is anyone's guess. [Zjol via Spluch]

<![CDATA[Malaysian Authorities Award Medals to Pirate DVD Sniffer Dogs]]> Lucky and Flo, two black Labradors, have been given outstanding service awards for their part in a five-month campaign that has crippled DVD piracy. The two hounds are responsible for the seizure of over $6 million worth of illegal DVDs in Malaysia, as well as the arrest of 26 people, despite the fact that a $28,560 bounty had been put on the dogs' heads.

The Motion Picture Association of America has declared itself so pleased with the canine division's results that it is to donate two more dogs to Malaysia's Anti-Piracy Unit at the end of the year. And it's not the first time that the MPAA has intervened in Malaysia. The new recruits will be trained in the art of sniffing out the chemicals used in the manufacture of DVDs.

Meanwhile, Lucky and Flo are on their way to North America, where they will embark on a promotional tour. First up is New York, then Toronto, where they will make an appearance at a film festival. [Reuters]

<![CDATA[iPod Nano Cloned and Cheapened]]> A company in Malaysia seems to have borrowed a bit of the old iPod Nano 2G design in making their players. The knockoffs support MP3, WMA, MTV, AMV, voice recording, ebook reading, FM radio, photo viewing, and comes with 1 or 2GB of memory. Best of all, they're now only RM 200 ($54) and RM 290 ($79).

Much less expensive than Apple's offering, but somehow we doubt it's built to the same standards. Would make for a great gag gift though.
