I've been married a bit over 36 years. We make most decisions together, but since I deal with our finances and pay the bills, I get the final say on whether we can afford it or not.
"Guys tend to be impulse buyers on big ticket items (they want immediate gratification) and ladies tend to shop around"
That's really funny! I find it is the other way around probably more than 99% of the time. I perhaps have a problem shopping around too much some times. And when it comes to serious gadgets - not many women have a clue! Of course this in most cases is the fault of the gadget - interface design - real gadgets should be obvious (like a set of scissors - except being a male left hander - I have problems).
I think it makes complete sense. We women get it all, and it's wonderful, the market caters to us. If I think about all the gadgets I have that most men don't use; hair irons, sewing machines, those cool paper cutting machines, vibrators. It could easily be more then a guy with a laptop, PS3, iPod and cell phone.
Most women also have children and no man in the house and they may own extra items to cater to their children.
Its says "influence". As a woman, I am going to hazard a guess at the the typical scenario they mean. The gadget purchase may be the mans idea, but she is probably the one to shop and compare. Guys tend to be impulse buyers on big ticket items (they want immediate gratification) and ladies tend to shop around. He decides what, and she decides where, when and how.
@Curves: Since gqadget freaks love researching gadgets, I think you're wrong. I bet "influence" means they guy presents a two or 3 options that meet his research criteria, and she voices an opinion based mostly on aesthetics.
@Zlevee: Remember, this isnt a poll of Giz readers, who obviously are a more educated buyer, it says ALL electronics purchases. Most couples who have joint accounts have a rule of "dont spend more than $X before asking the other partner", and I am sure this is the level of "influence" that they speak of. (I also research the crap out of anything before I buy it, but dont require a yes or no from anyone else as I am single.)
What counts as 'influence'? A butterfly flapping its wings can 'influence' a tornado. So? I'd like to see how much of buying decisions are influenced in the same degree by men. Otherwise, this is rather pointless.
@Reil: well considering influence just as pressing someone to buy, not the purchase itself, we can consider that both, man and woman, have influence in a purchase - so this article only mentions that only 90% of the purchases the woman exercised her influence.
So:
women= 90% of influence
men= 90% of influence + 10% of influence without women intevention.
@Lite bids farewell to KHAN!!!!!!!: Actually if they still made beer cans the same way you could have used the pull tabs folded over as a clasp to fasten the pieces of cardboard together..
@Lite bids farewell to KHAN!!!!!!!: One could turn that around and look at it from her point of view but instead of drive you could say something like ride...
@sinerasis: When I was young enough to ask, my mom wouldn't let me but by dad would. Then my mom changed her mind!
But then my dad changed his mind too.
It took me years to figured out they had developed a strategy of hope, delay, and wearing me out, and one that let them both be the good guy for a while.
Uhm, duh? If the woman isn't happy with how a TV or whatever fits into the room, she isn't going to want you to buy it.
Now the report itself is kind of misleading as it says 90% have influence, but it doesn't break down how much influence and in what areas. IE: Too expensive, too big, too ugly, not cute enough, doesn't meet her needs, or maybe just talking you out of wasting money?
The progressive wussification of the American man continues to be an advantageous transition, at least from the perspective of us men who tend to not do what we're told and savagely exploit any and all attributes that distinguish us from pandering supplicants in the eyes of women with good taste and the requisite personalities. Please, keep it up.

Or do they mean "provide the necessary capital for the purchase to occur?"
Cause really, two very different things.
And I'll let you make your own guesses about which one is which in my house.

*More like 85%!!!!!*
*Oh yeah!!!!!*
