@lankysob: I find fault with your premise. I listened to Dane Cook once or twice, and saw his act a few times on HoBO and Comedy Central. His act seems to be mostly over-enunciating things, raising his voice, repeating words, flopping around on stage, and littering in pop-culture references. While true many comics do this, they do it better. His success is he aims his humor at college students who have never heard the classics.
<Disclosure> I did steal his "Did I kill a janitor" joke when referring to my own massive keychain </Disclosure>
Umm... I consider myself somewhat of an authority on this subject and I can give this announcement a resounding "Meh."
This show jumped the shark several times over the past few years and realistically should have gone out with a bang about 5 years ago while its fans still wanted more. Now, at least from my perspective, we just want to be put out of our misery.
While I have the simpsons cast poster on my wall right behind me, I agree. The show should of ended years ago. What scares me is that there are tons of people that swear that the 'modern' seasons are even better then 'classic era'. I've kept my eye on the series even now and I saw an episode where Homer and Ned became bounty hunters.
Having been a fan of the show since it started, i STILL love to see what's in store for them. Yes, i'll be saddened when it finally does end, but for now, i'll just enjoy the ride.
They've given you hundreds of hours of entertainment for free. What could they possibly owe you? If anything, you owe them.
@jchabotte: I owe them my feedback. The movie was good. The blew about three seasons worth of humor on it. Every now and then they come out with something that makes me laugh like this Mapple scene. But far too often I find they stop short of making what could be a very funny scene funny.
Their sight gags drag on too long with not enough pay off and half the other jokes just fall flat. It has poor pacing and the story hasn't been hitting its beats for a long time.
Compare any gag they've done in the last three years to what I consider one of the greatest sight gags of all time:
Barney's accident in "Deep Space Homer" where Barney's jet pack runs out of fuel in midair. Barney bounces repeatedly off the corrugated metal roof of a pillow factory, then lands in the middle of the road, only to be run over by a marshmallow truck.
@eboku: Youre crazy! The new episodes OWN the old ones! Ever heard of BETTER GRAPHICS? No, of couse not. As for the show ending, it is still running strong, and is one of the best cartoons ever made. Bottom line, the "classic era" is more like the crap era and it sucks!
I find it more than a little creepy that if you watch an early Simpsons and then watch a recent one, they've barely aged. What sort of chemical bath do they float these guys in between shows to keep them looking young?
This is kind of like me in a way. I'm a huge Apple fan. But all I ever had was a 1st gen shuffle that was given to me for Christmas, and I was immensly happy with it. Then a few months ago someone gave me a Nano b/c it wasn't enough player for them and I fell in love with it as well. Of course I fill it with legal music that I own hard copies of, and not Frostwire.
And since I didn't see the episode, did anyone else think that Lisa was getting something for free, a la someone who complains, like we see on Consumerist?
If this was about Microsoft you guys would go crazy and laugh your ass off. Nobody touches dear Apple.
They've been over the news a lot lately with all the 'new' stuff coming out. Is Matt Groening obligated only to make fun of stuff when it's brand new anyway?
Apple didn't bring anything new the past few months and yet it's screaming all they're stuff is so spectacular. It's not. Other brands bring out new Laptops every week.
Wow. How topical. Commentary on anti-Muslim sentiment and on iPod culture. Shovelware episodes like this make me wonder whether Matt Groening wrote a shitload of episodes years ago and they're only getting around to making it now. Or, maybe, Groening is just THAT out of touch.
@TBM-Fan: TBM - are we talking Total Body Modification or Tunnel Boring Machine? The later TBM is a pretty good nickname, especially when you're talking about the VW twins.
Reading that coolhunting article, I was an early adopter to the ipod and I did switch to black earbuds later on, not because everyone else had white ones and I wanted to be different, it's just the sound quality out of standard ipod earbuds is so terrible...
But I did notice people buying white earbuds and using them on other players, I think it was one of the saddest things I've ever seen (that and the recent pic someone posted of an MSI(?) laptop with an apple logo over the MSI one...
@TessCulver: Yeah, when I saw that guy, I had to snap the shot. Ironically, on an iPhone. That is a perfect manifestation of what "aspirational brand" means.
The white earbuds were one the biggest "duhs" of electronic marketing and a continuation of the Oldsmobile lesson that, as far as gadgets are concerned, only Apple ever bothered to learn.
Charles Olds famously ran a negative campaign against Ford with the line "You can get a Ford in any color you want, as long as that color is black". Olds came up with such novel ideas as selling cars in different colors and making slight changes to trim to justify selling a new model car every year.
Apple was selling multicolored computers when every PC was a beige box and all-in-ones when every PC was a matte-black tower. When everyone shipped players with black headphones, Apple looked at how people actually use a portable player and realized it could advertise the product with white headphones. A Walkman is kept in the pocket; only the headphones are visible. It shouldn't have taken manufacturers long to figure that out.
It took other manufacturers over a year to come up with the novel idea of shipping white headphones.
Apple ships a lot of problem products - like the G4 Cube that was mocked in the episode; the one thing they don't screw up is marketing. While there are flops - the Mac mini and AppleTV - the brand is one of the strongest brands in the world.
