The new helicopter definitely was criticized for being too expensive during the Bush administration, too. This criticism isn't new, it's just morphed a bit now that the recipient has changed. The cost overruns on it have been rather...unusual, though, and now it seems like the same kind of advances in technology that the new helo was going to introduce can be implemented into the old ones as well. Maybe not everything, but a lot of them anyway.
The Osprey would make for a cool Marine One but I think it's actually too big for the job.
@Jeb_Hoge: @TrevEB: An Apache has a better survival rate. My vote is for an Apache as Marine One and a A-10 as Air Force One. Nothing quite symbolizes America like a minimum 20mm full auto cannon being the first thing people see as you approach.
By the way, the best way for the federal government to get out of this contract is to allege a security breach as a material breach by Lockheed Martin, thus effectively obliterating the benefit of the contract for the government-buyer.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Bush's administration put in the orders for the new helicopters after 9/11? On top of that, they were scheduled to be decommissioned in the next 5 to 7 years anyway, which was before either president took office.
But hey, if I'm wrong then I'll learn something new.
@shalegac: Didn't Citigroup order their jet before the markets fell? Yet they were forced by the government to cancel the contract and pay the penalty fee.
@SakhiKabobular: Or at the time that things were not so grim for the average person. The majority of people didn't even think there was anything wrong with the economy back then, and don't even play like you were one of those that read, think for themselves, and actually realized that there was a problem back then.
And the helicopters are not excessive waste. The current fleet is what 30-40 years old? We need a new fleet. Period. Find out why the cost is going through the roof, tell the company to either eat it or don't pay and start over again.
@SakhiKabobular: And who told them they had to make loans to people that couldn't pay, and started the conditions that lead to all of this? Well, I'll give you a hint, it was in the mid-90's. Not saying the Republicans didn't contribute later on, but it started somewhere.
@DownfieldComa: Well, if the heads of the big three were told that they should fly commercial, why can't our President? I don't mean on a commercial jet, but why can't he just fly on a converted civilian airframe(have to make the door taller so he doesn't keep pulling that Jango Fett all the time)? Or possibly a military airframe. Hell, I think our President would just be damn awesome if he arrived in an Apache w/some Secret Service strapped to the outside.

You'd be dangerous if you had a clue.
They ordered the plane during the period where they were handing out bad loans like they were candy thereby causing the problems.
Grow a brain, you Rethuglican.
