Is this test site some sort of quarry in the Uk. If so it would be ironic as these often feature as another planet on Dr Who and other low budget UK Sci-Fi

@TryAgain: There's a few places on earth eerie enough to pose as an alien backdrop in movies. Much of Pitch Black was filmed in Queensland, and the scenes of Klendathu and other bug planets in Starship Troopers were filmed in the badlands of Hell's Half Acre in Natrona County.

"Now where are we. This doesn't look like Bristol!"
"No, but I'd bet we're only about an hour away Doctor."
"What? I'm afraid we're on another planet altogether!"
"No Doctor. Pretty sure we're in the southwest."
    "But look! There's a robot!"
"That's "Bridget" Doctor. We're in 2009; I read about it."
"But look at that strange looking creature coming over the horizon! It's ghastly!"
"Doctor, that's just a Welshman, probably down from Cardiff for work. Don't be rude."

promises to one-up that of the US-based rovers

so, they're launching a decade later and the most they can do is "one" up? weak.

Did they really say communications would take "at least 20 minutes" to reach the rover? I'm pretty sure it's the other way around, and they'll take at most 20 minutes.

Haha, FPS mars map. It's actually just a 15' x 15' flat arena with no obstacles or anything to hide behind. The map's challenge is that there is a red-out due to dust storm where visibility drops to arms length. So, guns are useless in this map. Make sure to equip steel toe'd Tim's to maintain agility as you stub your toe on martian rubble.

"one scientist compared to Google street view."

I hope they're planning to observe appropriate privacy precautions, such as pixelating the faces of Martians so their identities can't be determined, and keeping the camera low enough to not see over the fences into Martians' yards. Britain - don't be evil!

    Confirmed by Doctor Bonkers...

Based on further photographic examination of the specimen, we've determined it to be a scaly monkey-like creature, which will now be calling the Lunareptomarmoset. Lunareptomaroset probably stood around 4 feet tall, had disproportionately long arms, and was able to swing from moon rock to moon rock with its prehensile tongue. This is an extraordinary exobiological find that will surely rock modern science.
