Now, call me silly but heat rises, and I don't think most recessed ceiling light balasts are designed to handle a lot of heat. In fact, they tend to be rather flaky on their own as it is.
Not to mention non recesses ceiling lights tend to have nice glass bowl covers over them that also trap heat from bulbs rather nicely.
This seems limited use at the moment...

The only snag with LEDs is that you can't dim them, well, probably not without converting to DC and a very expensive switch, or an expensive AC potential meter. I think I have that right (not an electrical engineer.)

@Jrsy Devil's Food Cake®: i heard they spun it like a top and used really high speed film so there was no blur. It also has a gyroscope installed.

Factual Correctness, your comment has none.

And yes, the less wattage put into a light bulb of equal light output means less heat. That's the problem with the 60 watt incandescent bulbs....you get X amount of watts of light, and 60-X worth of heat. X is probably a low single digit number.

Also, light bulb hours should only matter in DLP televisions. If you can't afford a $3 bulb once every 6 to 12 months, you shouldn't be living on your own paying rent or a mortgage

As for lifetime, I use Home Depot bulbs. If they blow before the guarantee on the box, you call up an 800#, read the code off the bulb, and they send you brand new ones, FOC. You then bring the dead ones back to HD, and they recycle them for free. But you're right, I should just throw money away every 6-12 months, rather than SAVE it. We don;t need to save money.

Also, the light that LEDs produce have a more natural look to them. I really can't explain it, you have to see it yourself to get an idea of the difference.
Another plus is that you can easily change the color of an LED light or even make it strobe. WOOT WOOT!

I prefer to just let the cave-trolls wallow in their own ignorance.

Which ones do you buy? the N:vision ones? ([www.homedepot.com])
I have a few that blew before the warranty, but i know its bad to throw them away since they have mercury in them, so i threw them in my closet.
AFAIK, you can go to www.lamprecycle.org to find out how to recylce the bulb, but it just links you to your states recycling department.
But if it blows/you need to recylce it, you can bring it back to HD?

@Deadhouseplants Started the Anti-Facebook Movement: Home Depot offers bulbs in three temps. Bright White, Soft White, and Daylight. They are all different "lights". They should have some demo bulbs set up at Home Depot to judge the difference. Seriously, they are usually on sale, but a six pack for under $9.00, and try some of the current generation bulbs. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

LED's are the next step, and an even better one since they consume close to nothing and have an incredible lifespan.
The problem with LED's at the moment is that there are many kinds of them, they all differ in light quality and the way the are powered etc. An International Standard has to be made up soon, but since the technology is still evolving, it is a difficult task.

I think there is a future in designer bulbs that have other color LEDs integrated into them, and using a special remote you can change it to any desired color. You know, for high-end homes.

I would like it simply because you can use one bulb for multiple applications. Change it to bug yellow and you have an outdoor light that doesn't attract bugs. Change it to white for the kitchen, garage and laundry room and a soft yellow glow for the rest.

It's prohibitively expensive, but really cool.

You do know that's a concept image? It's not actually going to look like that. I'm sure the metal will come off much different.

Um, did you read my comment? The image on this page is a concept image.
Like I said, the actual product will look different from the IMAGE ON THIS PAGE. Gee, I guess I didn't spell it out enough for the less powered.

All products are shot these days with the aid of CG and lighting, but since these are already ON SALE, those with them in their house (like @Pressure) can tell you that they WON'T look different.
See? I have CAPS LOCK too.
