And maybe after he is done "bombing" the Iranians with free wifi he can bomb Google until they stop helping the Chinese to censor the internet. But then he would have to pay more for his slave made elevator shoes.
This is a stupid idea. They'd have to be within tens of feet of the ground. They would get shot down. They would be invading another country's airspace, which is kind of an act of war.
For god sakes, neo cons, stop interfering with other countries. Yes, everyone wants freedom. That's a given. But every time we dick around with other people's revolutions we stink them up.
@Mark 2000: Where I do agree with you is the meddling of other countries but I disagree with your party politics. Neo-cons are not the only ones who meddle in affairs of other countries. Democrats do the same with Africa and the middle-east. With that being the case, it is best to think of yourself as an independent who judges politics based on policy, not their affiliation. You just look like an uneducated leftist who is close minded to what your side is saying as well. But, hey, it is America and a wonderful country to be. You can have your opinion just like myself.
As for the idea of McCain's, I'm at least proud of the man for trying to think about technology being used in this way. I do disagree with it being localized to one country (like other commentators have nicely stated) but having it worldwide utilizing satellites is brilliant. It doesn't have to be break-neck speeds but just freely available for anyone. And it is good to see that some people realize that defense spending/military projects helped create some of the most historic advancements in technology. Anybody? Yes, the internet is definitely one.
@Mesothelioma: No one here seems to realize it, but we already have this - it's called WildBlue, HughesNet, Skyway, Starband, etc. You can usually get one of these services by calling DirectTV, or Dish Network. It's only DSL speeds (up to 1.5Mbps/256kbps), but if the DOD wanted to foot the bill to make the internet functionality free for all Iranians with a satellite dish, and if there is anyone with a satellite broadcasting in that area capable of internet communications, it could be up and working as soon as next week. Of course the problem then, would be getting black market or makeshift modems capable of working with said service, into the hands of Iranian citizens.
As far as McCain's silliness about using a drone. WTF?! And we almost elected this complete moron as President? Oh yeah, violate another sovereign nation's airspace with not just any vehicle, but a fleet of military grade, WMDs. That's not helping spread freedom of information to the people of Iran, that is a declaration of war by anyone's definition. We can barely handle itty-bitty, old Iraq and itty-bitty, old Afghanistan, and we got North Korea breathing down our necks. So since we are spread so incredibly thin already, let's just fly some military drones into Iranian airspace and spread ourselves even thinner. Does someone feel a draft?
Fortunately, Obama's a pussy, so unless the Brits, or someone else is crazy enough to invade another country's airspace to spread free internet, then nothing will ever come of this absolutely BS idea.
@mares: why not? Everyone should have an equal oppurtunity to have their private info stolen. Politicians are people just like every(other asshole)one else.
@cloudnine: Right, because every story that makes John McCain's campaign look inept definitely doesn't apply to any other form of government.
People, this stuff happens all the time, it's not just exclusive to this year's Republican canidate and his campaign. A year ago, the government in Milwaukee, WI sent out letters to thousands of people with their full social security numbers printed visibly on the things. Then they did it again a few months later.
So, yeah, this sort of beurocratical oversight can definitely apply to any form of government just about anywhere at any given point in time. And of course Obama might be just as guilty, but no one will call him out if and when he makes/has made this sort of mistake.
@UsamahHamilton: Regardless, McCain is still an old bastard of a man who doesn't understand anything about modern day civilization and should be put in an old folks' home.
@cloudnine: So I take it from your post that you think Obama does all the tech stuff in his campaign. If a staffer in Idaho has a problem, they send it to Obama to fix, as he is a techno wiz?
@Tietsu: And this my friends, is an example of a Straw Man and also a Red Herring. They are both logical fallacies. At no point did Tietsu's response answer my questing. It instead dodged it.
For those going "This serves no purpose" this is the beginning of real holographic imaging. You've got to have the 3D source before you can start projecting images in the air. Once they get it so that they can move the data from place to place fast they can then figure out how to project in the air.
@Technogen: Getting 3D sourcing is no problem. There are numerous technologies for doing it. All they did was throw a lot of very expensive cameras and computers at the problem, which is no more than was done for The Matrix. They haven't innovated or developed anything exciting here.
The means to display a live 3D hologram would be nice. Figuring out how to project it in the air is the only hurdle, and CNN didn't come close. This was just a gimmicky stunt that did nothing to help improve coverage of the election or deliver news in a more informative way.
What's more interesting is the surreality of a "reporter" *pretending* he sees something he does not so he can be a side-show barker for this pointless waste of time.
If technology serves some useful purpose, I'm all for it in news shows. But this was tantamount to having Wolf say, "And now that we've called New Hampshire, we've got Roscoe the dancing walrus live here IN THE STUDIO!!!"
It was like watching reporters talk about election statistics while riding on a Unicycle. The Daily Show is going to eat them *alive*.
Well Libs, you are about to elect our first Muslim, anti-Israel, anti-white, Marxist president with known terrorist as well as extremist ties and with a wife that is amazingly more extreme in the same beliefs. You have 4 years to do your best to push us towards socialism and bomb a few aspirin factories to prove you have stones from time to time. You think your making progress and you are but not in the direction you think.
Tomorrow you will see Osama Bin Laden, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Kim Jang Ill and many other pinko commies celebrate with you. Have a good time and just remember you no longer have Bush to blame for F***-ups, these will be on you.
Bush has admittedly dissapointed us amazingly but we have not seen a terrorist attack in our country for over 7 years. That is about to change as your party feels that it is unfair we dominate the world so greatly and our defenses and offenses will be weakened in order to give them more of a chance. 94 percent of blacks have voted for Obama because of his race which tells me that perhaps white people are no longer the racists in this country.
Well, that's how I really feel about it so go ahead and rip me a new one.
@vista64guy: Wow. Do you have any idea how many times you were wrong there?
I'm going to comment on one complete fallacy you stated in the above comment: If black people were the racists in this country, then in every previous election, 0 percent of blacks would have voted.
I'm going to take another bit hit for this (had some hateful messages left for me), I think he does have a point that a lot of blacks voted for him because he is black and this was something that did light a fire under by butt. But then again, at the same time, I think that number of whites that didn't vote for him for the same reason evened it out.
@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: I fail to see how that is racism. If a Jew ran, I would be all over that. Provided he was not Lieberman, or conservative. Black people largely don't vote Republican. They largely don't vote. They felt this time they were represented more, and rightly so. I fail to see how this qualifies as racism.
@vista64guy: Even if 94% of blacks voted for Obama, that did not swing the election for him. The black voting population of the United States is less than 10% of the total population. The current estimate of voter turnout in this presidential election is slightly less than 150 million.
You are also assuming that black people who voted for Obama voted based on race alone which is a specious, short-sighted, and insulting remark. Even if a portion of them did, that's no less damning that a Republican voting for the party nominee based solely on party affiliation, rather than issues, which happens much more often.
Even if every black person of legal voting age voted for Obama, that still means that more than twice as many of that number, which included caucasians, asians, hispanics, and other races, also voted for Obama.
It's time to stop letting race play an issue, especially when you don't have your facts straight.
All we can do now is hope that positive change comes swiftly in the time ahead of us.
@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: Is that any less stupid than people who vote solely based on party affiliation regardless of a nominees stance on various issues? Because, statistically, that happens far more often as has been reported numerous times. It's no surprise that people vote for familiar, or representative, nominees.
It's also insulting the the black population at large to assume that a majority of them voted for Obama based on race alone. Also, even if 50% of voting age blacks (which is less than 5% of the US population) voted for Obama, that is still only less than 15% of the counted votes. Furthermore, 50% black voter turnout would be an unprecedented number of black voters, and the likelihood is perhaps 30 percent black voter turnout.
Well the people have chosen their government, I guess they'll have to live with it. I would insult the upcoming tax hike on my wages, but I think that layoff I'll be part of in the next 6 months will pretty much void that concern. Ahh well, with all the money going from the rich to the poor, welfare should be paying pretty good. That is, unless Obamas buddies that taliban get a hold of us.
America, you have voted. This is the government you've chosen.
@johnnyabnormal: For the most part, very liberal... I took a closer gander at the tax breaks and agreed there wasn't much of one, I hate to see animals tied up, and sometimes children need protection from their own parents. Some of the real costly ones I voted against though.
@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: Yeah, I was for prop 2 as well. It's insane what goes on in slaughter houses & the cost of making our food supply more healthy is like 10 cents more per dozen eggs. Plus, the jobs you create by refitting these places so animals can at least stand up or turn around. I'm not rolling in money, but I try to buy organic and free range simply because it's healthier and more ethical.
sorry but this still looked like hell. was in a bar in chicago when they did it for the first time and when jessica yellin "beamed in" everyone started laughing.
@raffleking: Nevermind that it looked dumb, it IS dumb. You're using all this tech and money to do something that is in no way better than just showing her in a box on the right side of the screen. It's just stupid.
