    Will he disown his kids if they end up buying Macbooks for college? The way I see it, for your own personal use, it's fine and dandy to ban whatever you want, but it's never OK to ban the use of something that other members of the household want to use. You don't want an iPod or an iPhone, that's fine, but if your wife wants one, and intends to get one, then TSFU and step aside mofo.

    You can bet the two devices aren't banned from Microsoft R&D or is that C&A (Copy and Assimilate)? I'm sure there are a lot of other things the kids aren't allowed to have that aren't Apple products (but aren't as sensational to report about). It's their right as parents.

    @Kaiser 'Google-It-Yourself' Machead: Something tells me that the phrase hard-earned has a different meaning to the Gate's children. As a parent of a young child I'm pretty sure that even if my kids earns the money doesn't mean that they get a work around to buy stuff Mom or Dad says is off limits. Personally, I don't think an iPod or iPhone would be on the banned list. Hookers and crack..possibly.

    @duffyanneal loves toast: Perhaps, but yes. I assumed that we meant anything other than things that were of questionable standards (in the sense of prostitution and drugs), rather than simple and harmless consumer products.

    Did you guys see Triumph of the Nerds narrated by Robert X. Cringely circa 1996? It was pretty much like that movie where Noah Wiley plays Jobs, except it's a documentary and Jobs plays Jobs and Bill plays Bill. Really interesting history of the PC.


    Anyways, my point is that in interviews with both Gates and Jobs, they both admit to stealing ideas and playing catch-up with each other. Most famously re. Apple taking Xerox's GUI ideas for the Mac, Jobs said, "Good artists copy. Great artists steal". And he stole that quote from Picasso.


    So it gets kinda tiresome with all these digs about Apple and MS stealing ideas from each other and from the moon. They know they do it, they admit to doing it, every company does it. What's the big deal?

    @Mark Pettersson: Used to, but it was a non-voting stock ownership. Now that stock has been dwindled down. Yes Microsoft still owns a sliver of Apple, but not as much as they used to before 2000

    @Balance_In_Life: Actually, I thought it was all sold years ago. Wasn't it something like 150 million dollars? That's chump change. Bill probably has more than that lost in his sofa cushions. When M$ sold the stock they made a healthy profit.

    Sorry, don't mean to pick on you here LCHE, but please explain in 1000 words or less how MS cheats us out of our money more so than Apple (or feel free to compare MS to any other for-profit company).

    @imTheKing: They're at the very least on equal footing, I chose the zune mostly because of the desktop software, but also the overall design of the device and wifi. I personally think the zune is superior design wise and interface wise, but they both share the same amount of polish.

    @telepheedi: nah I hear you. They are totally on the same page. Feature wise, no doubt the Zune has better/more features but my biggest complaint is that Microsoft has no clue how to do marketing and on top of that, they never really bring anything that's "new" or "fresh" to the consumer. Not that Apple is bringing something new (lets face it, everything's stolen from another), but they know how to take something that has great possibilities, and provide it to the consumer. Thats really where Apple shines. If Microsoft could cut into that small area (which isn't easy to figure out), they'd be right along the same page.
