Perhaps because you don't know if it's exploding or taking off.

The Delta II rocket was taking the Messenger spacecraft to Mercury from launch pad 17-B at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Obviously, the thing wasn't exploding: The probe is now successfully observing and taking beautiful photographs of Mercury. [Boston.com]

<![CDATA[Nasa's Messenger Sends First Full Fly-By Image of Mercury]]> Yesterday at 4:40AM east time, Nasa's Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging spacecraft) flew by just 125 miles over the surface of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System. This is the first time in history that the whole planet is going to be photographed in its entirety by an Earthling probe, with amazing resolution and ultra-crisp detail.

The first time Mercury was photographed up close and personal was in the Mariner 10 mission. Mariner was only able to take pictures of one hemisphere during its flybys, and its camera had a very low resolution: It could only capture details 0.99 miles across. Messenger's wide angle and narrow angle cameras, on the other side, have a resolution of 59 feet across, and is going to be able to take pictures of the fully-lit planet. All while trying not get fried up by the sun thanks to its rotatable solar panels—which balance temperature and power generation—as well as its multilayered insulation. [NASA]

<![CDATA[Windows Live Updated For Windows Mobile Devices]]> Not content to just offer a new version of Windows Live Messenger for a competing platform, Microsoft today released an updated official version of the full Windows Live app for Windows Mobile that features contacts syncing, support for Live Spaces, Live Maps, and push email from HotMail, MSN, or Live accounts. It's a free mobile download, though you'll have to make sure you nuke the old version first lest you mess up your device. [Download, via JK On The Run]

<![CDATA[Windows Live Messenger Finally Arrives For BlackBerry]]> Many companies use Windows Live Messenger for corporate IM because it's free and comes with pretty much any Windows computer they purchase. Windows Mobile users have had mobile IM love for awhile, but BlackBerry users have been left out, at least as far as official messengers go. They had already been promised an official client, and today Microsoft published it. Also included is live Hotmail support, for those who still use it. Go and download it, BlackBerry addicts, if you haven't already. [Download, via Ars]

<![CDATA[Meizu Adding Live Messenger to iPhone Vaporware Clone]]> The apparently incombustible Meizu CEO, Jack Wong, has just announced that they are going to add Live Messenger to their M8 cellphone, the rather pathetic and sad motherboard that wants to be an iPhone clone when it grows up (if it ever gets released). In other words: new vaporware announced for vaporware. The usual cynics are probably asking themselves "why should I care about this crap?" Which is exactly what we are asking ourselves right now. <![CDATA[The Note Toaster Design]]> Why leave notes to your family on a magnetic dry erase board on your refrigerator when you can write directly on the toaster where nobody will see it? Actually, this toaster doesn't actually let you write notes onto the toaster, it burns the note into the toast as well, which means your kid has plenty of time to read your reminders to them as they eat their breakfast. Or they can just shove the whole thing into their mouths and pretend they didn't see it at all. Either way, it's breakfast done right. [Yanko Design]

<![CDATA[Halo 3 Accessories, Messenger Kit Coming September 4]]> Those Xbox 360 Halo 3 accessories are all coming next week, and with it comes the Xbox 360 Messenger kit. The accessories are two controllers, one Master Chief and one Covenant Brute, and a limited edition Master Chief figurine by McFarlane toys. The Messenger Kit is that QWERTY keyboard add-on that lets you type without hooking up a USB keyboard. There's also a Halo 3 wireless headset, which is just the same as the old headset bot Halo'ed up—which probably means the quality is still going to be as bad. The accessories will be $59, and the kit will be $29.

<![CDATA[Microsoft's i'm Initiative Gives to Charity When You Chat]]> You know those annoying forward your luddite friends send you that claim that Bill Gates will give you money if you forward it to 10 friends? And how you always lose a bit of respect for the person sending it to you, as since like 1998 everyone knew they were BS? Well, don't judge me too quickly here, as this seems legit.

Microsoft is launching a new program called the i'm Initiative. Basically, users of Live Messenger can put a small logo at the end of their screenname, and then every time they chat with someone a small amount of money will be donated to the cause of their choice. The more you IM, the more money gets donated. Seems like a pretty awesome deal to us. What's the catch? I can't really see one other than the fact that an undefined "portion" of ad revenue from the emoticon (how does an emoticon generate ad revenue, anyways?) goes to the good cause, with the rest presumably going to put gas in Bill Gates' jetpack.

<![CDATA[TV Messenger - Caller ID on TV]]>

TV Messenger is a video pass-through that will add caller ID to your television screen. Sure, the device has a 14 caller log for missed calls, but what we care about is the immediate, automatic notification on-screen identifying the caller when the phone rings. Unfortunately the TV Messenger doesn't support any high quality video inputs, or mobile phones through Bluetooth or something. Those functions would be well worth the $110 price tag.

But how many times have I been in the middle of (fill in embarrassing tv show) when the phone rings and it's (fill in famous 80s actor/politician who has been charged for recent sex scandal) who just wants to cry about their (fill in mundane problem) while I miss the moment when we finally see (fill in predictable romantic plot arc)? Customize it to your liking.

<![CDATA[Siemens Gigaset S450 Cordless Phone With Yahoo! Messenger VoIP]]> Oh look, more phone and phone accessory news today. Did the UN declare this International Phone Release Day or something?

Much like the Windows Live Messenger phones that have been popping up lately, this Siemens Gigaset S450 is a cordless phone that connects to the PC via a USB adapter. But instead of Windows Live Messenger, this phone works on Yahoo! Messenger—oh yes!

Now you can walk around the house, provided your house only goes 50 meters in each direction from the phone, and make calls through your landline or through Yahoo! Messenger. Pretty snazzy, if you're into the whole VoIP thing, and know people who use Y!M.
